Had a wonderful week at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott enjoying the resort activities, pools and ocean view room. The staff activities and exercise programs are a plus. Would have rated it 5 Stars but for the disappointing food options at Hawaii Calls restaurant and the fact that with the age of portions of the property, deferred maintenance necessitated the plumber 3 times.

I stayed 6 nights and my overall impression of the resort improved. Initially, the place seemed dated, small, cold, and bland. By the end of my stay, I was more appreciative of the low-key, less hectic nature. It's a relatively small resort and has only one restaurant/bar, so the food and drink options are very limited. There is a small coffee bar in the lobby that offers quick bites between 6am and noon. But the rest of the time you're stuck with the one restaurant/bar combo on the ground floor. The overall design seems right out of the 1980s, clean, attractive, but built for an older clientele with simpler tastes. It's well located behind an excellent public beach and small bay, perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and the usual water sports. The resort pools are nice, but largely filled with small children most of the day. The staff is as nice as one might expect--nothing special. Be aware, as is common in most American resorts, that the price you'll ultimately pay is much more than the advertised price upfront. Sadly, Americans have become both immured and immune to the unexpected and hidden price hikes that accompany such resorts--so-called resort fees, service fees, towel fees, parking fees, taxes, charges, and added costs that all end up jacking the final bill by as much as 50% more. An advertised room rate of, say, $260/night can actually cost as much as $350 or more once all the extra fees and taxes are included--and that doesn't include tips. So be aware.

We loved that this property was close to shopping and located at a beautiful beach, Anaehoomalu Bay. We also loved meeting Hiwahiwa who took us on the cultural walking tour and educated us about the ancient fishponds that the property is on. Both woman at the lobby cafe were also very friendly. Our room was clean and located near the pool. Bartender at Hawaii Calls during sunset on Wednesday had lots of Aloha. The valet attendant that morning (wearing a visor, middle aged gentleman) wasn't as helpful as I would expect a valet attendant to be. That is my only unpleasant experience.
