THE HISTORIC ISLAND HOTEL
The Island Hotel, built between 1859 and 1860, is a treasured piece of Floridaâs rich history. Originally constructed as Parsons and Haleâs General Store, this tabby-walled structureâcrafted from oyster shell, limestone, and sandâhas withstood hurricanes, floods, and even the Civil War. During the war, Union troops repurposed the building as a barracks and supply warehouse, sparing it from the destruction that leveled much of Cedar Key.
For over 160 years, the Island Hotel has been a cornerstone of the Cedar Key community, with each owner adding their unique touch to its storied legacy. Among the most memorable was Bessie Gibbs, who managed the hotel from 1946 to 1973, transforming it into a vibrant hub for politicians, celebrities, and visitors. The iconic King Neptune Lounge, featuring murals by artist Helen Tooker, continues to be a beloved centerpiece of the hotel. The hotel has also been a favorite of famous guests, including Jimmy Buffett and Richard Boone.
In 2004, the Bair family took ownership of the property and has since worked to maintain its historic charm and warm hospitality. Today, the Island Hotel offers guests a timeless retreat where they can connect with the rich heritage and allure of "Old Florida."

CEDAR KEY'S RICH HISTORY
Cedar Key is a small island community steeped in history, dating back to its establishment in 1859 as the western terminus of Floridaâs first cross-state railroad. This connection to the railway transformed the town into a bustling port and commercial hub. Cedar Key became known for its thriving cedar industry, supplying wood for pencils to markets across the country. The islandâs name comes from the abundance of cedar trees that once covered the region, although few remain today.
In 1896, Cedar Key was hit by a devastating hurricane that destroyed much of the town, leading residents to relocate the community to its current site. Despite this setback, Cedar Key endured, reinventing itself as a quiet fishing village and later as a tourist destination. The townâs untouched natural beauty, rich artistic culture, and historic charm make it a favorite getaway for those looking to experience the slower pace and timeless atmosphere of "Old Florida." Visitors can still see remnants of its past, from the railroad trestles to the historic buildings that line its streets, offering a glimpse into a time when Cedar Key was at the center of Floridaâs development.
