Mount Shasta towers over everything else in northern California. Winter treks on the mountain require snowshoes, but are rewarded with a smoky view of all the ranges and valleys below. I wish the photos we took even came close to comparing to the real deal.

So glad I made the 1 mile trek up the railroad tracks to this hidden gem in NorCal. There is officially no trail, but park your car above Shasta Retreat then walk through town to the railroad tracks. Follow along the tracks for about a mile and when you come to the first bridge over the Sacramento River look right. You'll hear them too. Follow the path and you will be stunned. This picture only covers part of the falls. They are 200 feet wide and are Springs pouring out of the rock face. I'm so glad I didn't let the fact that there was no trail stop me. Do beware there's trains. 2 passed me and they come close. Well worth the risk!
