75m2 renovated townhouse with great access to Arashiyama, Gion, and Kinkakuji
A fully renovated LICENSED Kyotoâs traditional townhouse with four bedrooms, island kitchen & dining, wood deck, tea room and bath tub both facing garden. Fully equipped with electric appliance for living and cooking. 3 min to subway/tram stations, 5 min subway ride to Kawaramachi / Shijo / Gion, a direct access to Arashiyama (19min tram), Kinkaku-ji (17min bus), and Osaka (45min). The largest restaurant/bar area in the west around the stations and two supermarkets in a minute from the house.
The house is the north part of twin house structure (and independent from the south, which is also an accommodation for tourists) and first built in 1930âs as wooden townhouse with its unique twin design at the time. After continuous minor modifications and fixations over several decades since then, the entire building went through its first-time full renovation in 2016 by a collaboration of Kyotoâs top machiya (traditional Kyoto wooden house) renovator and provider HACHISE CO.,LTD. and Kyotoâs entrepreneur architecture, furniture and interior designer FHAMS CO., LTD.
The two-story townhouse consists of a stainless island kitchen in a wide dining area, a living room, a tea room facing a Japanese garden, a spacious entrance hall, an open air wood deck, and a powder/toilet room and a shower/bath room on the 1st floor and the master bedroom, a tatami room, and the center hall on the 2nd floor.
The master bedroom with two single beds can be transformed into a super king seamless bedding for a couple with kids as needed. Both of the center hall and the tatami room hold one thick double mattress. The tea room on the 1st floor can be used for a single bedroom if not used for relaxing space to view the small Japanese garden over coffee/tea. So the house can hold up to seven adults, six adults and a couple of kids, etc. A baby cot can be arranged in the center hall as well. Please talk to the owner so he can set up best to fit the group composition of the guest
The kitchen and dining area is another hallmark of the house. The stainless island kitchen with three gas stoves sits in the middle, a see-through cupboard holding dishes and cups is in front of the warm orange colored wall, and a dining table for five is continuously arranged from the island. The appliance includes a microwave, an oven toaster, a refrigerator, rice cookers, a coffee mil and a server, and a set of pans and pots.
The powder room area includes a toilet with a bidet function, a Panasonic automatic washer and dryer, and a sink. Next to this room is the bath and shower room facing the Japanese garden. The owner provides bath/face towels, shampoo, rinse, soap, and a hair dryer.
The entrance hall can be used to store your luggage to relieve guests from lifting and dragging around it in the house. If you go upstairs, the hall in the center can serve as a place to relax by looking down the entrance hall or communicating with those in the 1st floor through the large opening.
This was the most fantastic location for our five weeks in Kyoto, and just around the corner from the best supermarket ever. The house was really comfortable, with a bigger than usual kitchen, and even though we ate out heaps at all of the restaurants which are roundabout, we were also able to cook ourselves for a few nights of the week. All in all it was a great place to stay while my partner and I did our respective courses in Kyoto.
The host was very helpful, organized, and communicative. Even with 5 people there was enough space, and the host was able to adjust the space well enough to accommodate. He gave us a great overview of what to expect as well. The space was lovely and easy enough to get to various areas around Kyoto, especially via the nearby Saiin station. I need a bathtub that can reheat the water in my life.
The host went out of their way to inform us about the area and tourist attractions from the time of booking until checkout. Location was very convenient to get around Kyoto and we loved the traditional home. Highly recommend.
We had an incredible time in Kyoto and at Shimpeiâs pavilion. The recommendations at the townhouse are so thoughtful and helpful! We (my husband and 5 year old son) were easily able to navigate around and did so much adventuring! We slept great and the amenities at the house were really thoughtful! Plenty of blankets and pillows. The house is a 2 minute walk from the grocery store, which has an incredible selection. The townhouse has a great amount of utensils and sauces. You have to try the #1 ramen place on Shimpeiâs guide- it was the best we had in Kyoto! We also used a lot of the public transportation options which were easy to navigate and fun but the Go taxi system worked well too. Thank you Shimpei for an awesome stay. We really appreciate it and making our trip enjoyable in Kyoto!
We loved our stay in Kyoto and wished we could stay longer. So much to see and do. Shimpeiâs house was set up perfectly for our needs. Shimpei was a fantastic host showing us how to use everything and then leaving us with stacks of information including maps of kyoto. Highly recommend this as a base for Kyoto with a group.
The home was set up very well for long term stays, with a complete kitchen, bath with clothes washer and even bathrobes and house slippers! It was very easy to reach 2 train stations as well as local eateries and grocery stores. All the appliance instructions are posted and easy to follow. We loved the automatic tub and toilet!
We really enjoyed our stay, and the owner/host stayed in touch with us throughout, answering our questions quickly with advice.

We had an unforgettable stay in Kyoto. This house has lived up to all our expectations. Shimpei is an excellent host! The house is equipped with everything you can ask for. Information regarding the operation of the house, places and restaurant suggestions are well researched and are written both in Japanese and English. The iconic places mentioned are minutes within taking the train. Eating places, groceries are walking distance from the house. Our host took time to answer all our inquiries and gave us pertinent information that really helped us specially on our way home so we wonât miss our flight. Shimpei guided us to the station and was with us from start to finish. Thank you sir for making our Japan trip a memorable one. We are already looking forward to our next trip to Japan in the near future! Thank you very much for everything!
