Gorgeous sunsets, short walk to beach access
The CLUBHOUSE is located near Saugatuck-Douglas in Glenn, the PANCAKE TOWN! The Clubhouse is situated high on a bluff, down a quiet country road along the shores of Lake Michigan where you can enjoy the cool breezes and lovely sunsets over the Lake from our large wrap-around deck.
The Clubhouse is very user friendly--with an open floor plan, there is space to hang out together, or you can find a quiet nook to read a book or write in your journal. The back yard is large and full of possibilites--badminton, star gazing, or a game of tag. There's a creek nearby to hunt for frogs and a woodsy area behind the house. With the Lake on the west and the woods on the east, the CLUBHOUSE has it all! It's epecially popular with cylists and walkers, since the local roads are not as busy as other lakeshore areas. On rainy days, we provide an interesting collection of games, puzzels, TV, DVDs and high speed interenet.
A perfect cottage for families to enjoy the sounds of nature, and a slower pace. A short walk (less than 1/4 mile) down the road brings you to a grassy clay slope, and a few stairs, bringing you to the Glenn beach. In years past, there was plenty of beach where you could take a nap, a swim or work on that novel you've been trying to write. Over the summer, the beach will continue to change and evolve, hopefully getting wider and more user-friendly. The children will enjoy hunting for critters in the creek, or minnows in the big lake. That being said, you are only a short 15 minute drive to 2 of the most highly acclaimed beaches in the world--Saugatuck's Oval Beach and South Haven's South Beach. There is also the Pier Cove beach, Casco Preserve, and State Park--all have beaches this year!
Holland is only 20 minutes to the north, where you can enjoy movies, farmers markets, shopping, and museums and all things Dutch. A little closer to Glenn is Saugatuck, long noted for its artistic community. The galleries are enticing with cutting edge artwork from the local artists, and downtown Saugatuck is full of fun shops that offer a wide variety of Michigan treasures to take home with you. Saugatuck also has all the vacation standards--ice cream, fudge, great dining, and even a ferry! A growing community of entrepreneurs live nearby, offering cider at the Virtue Cidery and Crane Orchards, local wine at Fenn Valley and the newer Modales and Little Man wineries. Holland, Saugatuck and South Haven all have Farmer's Markets on Saturdays and Wednesdays where you can buy local organic produce.
To the south, a 15 minute drive brings you to South Haven, with a wide variety of shops, restaurants, and boating opportunities. Don't miss the beautiful South Haven Pier and the Blueberry festival! Further to the east is Casco township, home of many fine family farms and Cogdal winery. In fact, you can go on a winery tour of many of the local wineries. And don't miss Virtue Cidery in Fennville. Fresh fruits and vegetables are available at local farm stands, and local cheeses as well. Or go to Fennville, just a short 20 minute drive, to the incomparable Crane's Orchard for sandwiches and pie, (now also serving alchohol) or Salt of the Earth, a quality restuarant that specializes in local produce, grass fed beef, and yummy breads and baked goods and coffee. And for sanwiches and soup and other gourmet goodies, there is Farmhouse Deli in Douglas on Blue Star Highway. Southwest Michigan is paradise!
The house itself is lovely. It is third back in a row off the lake so you have a partial water view from the deck and one upstairs window. It was comfortable cottage feeling. However it was advertised with walkable lake access down a "gentle slope". The actual beach acess ended in a washout with a broken stair case. Once navigated down that danger found the water was extremely dangerous to acess. The beach had been backfilled with large cement waste including rusty metal pieces. This was then covered in algae making it slippery. This continues 50 yards out from the water line. Had the waves been any rougher I would not have been able to get back out. When I questioned the owner she claimed to be unaware of this despite living in the neighborhood and another listing on her profile apologizing for the "rocky" beach. Then suggested travel to a beach several miles away that is only accessible through tick filled trails. We ended up driving 20 minutes to a paid beach. The house is priced for lake access and if were going have to drive to a beach would have picked nicer houses with direct lake views in the same price point. The house would be fine if it were honest in its advertising.
This is a charming, older but functional rental. We appreciated the wraparound porch, the piano and guitar - especially since we had a couple of musicians. We enjoyed the dining table for meals and games. Probably time to update the kitchen and bathroom. But good value for price. From the listing we expected to be able to wade or even swim at the beach. But the rocks and seaweed made that impossible - and the booklet in the rental specified staying 10-feet from water. The steps to the beach were tough to descend, even for the millennials! The âplaygroundâ was sad - a single wooden swing. Finally, the listing mentioned two twin beds in a bedroom but there is only a double bed in each bedroom. We still enjoyed the proximity to South Haven and the nice woods. I think if we would have had the expectation of staying at rental and going to SoHa for the beach we would have been less disappointed. Still overall a good value compared to other rentals I checked with short notice. But do recommend some updates and explaining beach in the listing.
Beautiful house antiques n art, hippie vibe yet with modern conveniences. Well stocked kitchen. A/C working great in every room. Stunning location. Private, yet lovely old sparsely populated neighborhood on a cliff above the lake. Great vista and gorgeous sunsets. Walk down the lake and swim, collect interesting cool rocks. I would definitely stay here again
This place seemed smaller than listed. I think the description had it at 2,300 square feet or so. I didn't measure it but it would really surprise me if it's that big. The inside of the house was clean but has quite a bit of what I consider to be antique clutter. If you like that type of thing, you'll probably feel right at home here. The yard and landscaping needs a little TLC. The fridge and washer and dryer could be updated.
While not right out on Fabun Road, you can see the lake from the cottage (especially from the deck) and the cottage is tucked back on a short dead end road which is quiet and more private than Fabun Road. Not that Fabun Road is all that busy. It's a nice scenic road for relaxing walks.
The owner lives nearby and is quick to respond to any questions you have or things you might need.
The beach access is 1/4 mile down the road (Glenn Beach access). To get there, you either need to walk or drive and park in the limited parking area for the beach access. The Glenn Beach access lane is fairly steep so watch your step! (the top of the access drive is probably about 50 or so vertical feet above the beach) As the lake level is relatively high right now, the beach is fairly narrow and rocky. If you want a sandy beach, drive to beaches in South Haven (south) or Saugatuck or Holland (north).
We had a wonderful stay here. House was very cozy. The path down to the beach was a little steep so we werenât able to walk down it but the beaches in South Haven are close and beautiful. Hopefully we will be back again!
This is a very sweet cottage in a beautiful location on Lake Michigan. The beach is great for rock hunting and the location is very quiet and peaceful. It is also a very short drive into South Haven for bigger beaches, restaurants and shops. The cottage worked out great for our family's long weekend trip.
We all had a wonderful time. The house was so adorable and had plenty of room for all of us. Patricia was great at communicating and answered all my questions promptly, we even had the pleasure of meeting her the second day we were there. The house does sit off the road and has woods on the back side, very much enjoyed the privacy. The sunsets were absolutely amazing, the beach area was perfect for our 4 teen boys. We just loved everything about our cute little cottageâ€ïž
Owner was very friendly. AC & Wifi worked great. Beach near by is great for rock hunting. Place did have mice, as we found some mice feces, but it is out in the country.
When booking this property, it was a budget friendly option that seemed to have the space we needed and looked clean. The age of the home was not a concern but the pictures ended up not being an accurate representation of the house or the location. If you are on a budget but would still like to be close to the lake, this could be a good option for you. As previous reviews state, it was not clean and does have a mildew smell. The blinds didnât work & had mold on them. The sheets are very old & scratchy so I would recommend bringing your own. On a positive note, the lake views and sunsets are hard to beat. It was a convenient location to all of the local towns to explore and it was affordable compared to other nearby options. Most of the beach photos included are not of the walkable Glenn Beach area.
DO NOT STAY HERE!!!! Read until you get to the part about rodents and non-locking doorsâŠ
The place was dirty when we arrived, hair on the stove, dirty counters and such. Turned on the water and the smell of sulfur filled the house.
The bedroom on the main floor, has a door that says âStay out â privateâ. You cannot open it from your side but you have no way of keeping others from coming in through that door right where you are sleeping. It connects to the other half of the house where I believe the host resides. Very, very creepy!
We try and lock up the house for the night. The front and back doors don't lock. This is very disconcerting.
At bedtime, I find mice poo on my pillow and night stand. It wasnât there earlier. Now at 11pm, I am stuck. It was a very long night of sitting up on the sofa not wanting to sleep and debating if I should go sleep in my car. Before leaving in am, we speak with Patricia. She says we should not worry about safety, it is a very safe neighborhood. She knew about 1 of the doors not working and said if we tried hard enough we could get one of the doors to lock. Then when we told her about the mice, she said we were in the country and should expect critters in the house.
While we were out, we get a message that she put a mouse trap in the silver drawer where the mice usually go and that she tried getting a handyman but no luck yet. Ick!!!! When we get back to property we find more mice droppings now upstairs where there were none before, this is awful. We open the silverware drawer to find the mouse trap she set and the mice poo right next to the trap that she didnât even bother to clean up. I have pictures, it was disgusting. We finally give up, we are not staying any longer. I let her know we appreciate her efforts but we are uncomfortable and need to find different accommodations. We ask if she has another property available, she does but says we would find it unsuitable as well. Then I ask her to please refund us the remaining two nights as we would like relocate.
She tells us to start the process with VRBO. I ask if she is going to approve the refund. She says âno, this is how I make my livingâ. âI just didnât like the place from the beginning and that is the problemâ. She proceeds to tell me âGood luck! Sometimes VRBO sides with the guest, but most of the time with the host. So good luck getting your refund!â Wow!
There are a lot other issues too many to name.... Ruined our a chunk of our trip! I have pictures & video proof of statements made !
The house is in a good location and it was comfortable enough. The home is very old and needs a little work. (For example I was not able to lock the back door, one of the upstairs bedroom doors needed to be propped shut with a garbage can).
We very much enjoyed our stay at this property. The property itself is in a private location, which is great if you're trying to escape the hustle and bustle. We had deer visit us every day and even though it was quite warm when we stayed there, the breeze off the lake made it seem much cooler. Just a short walk and you'll see some of the most amazing sunsets ever. Would definitely recommend this property.
