Around the Area Birch Bay moves at its own pace. The tidal flats stretch for miles, the beach warms up in summer as the tide pulls back, and the birdwatching is genuinely good â the Audubon Society recognizes it as one of 50 Important Birding Areas in Washington State. Captain Vancouver stopped here in 1792 and the bay takes its name from the black birch trees his crew used to brew beer on the voyage. Grab coffee in Blaine before heading to the state park. Spend an afternoon walking Semiahmoo Spit. Bellingham is close enough for a day trip, far enough that you wonât feel like youâre staying in the suburbs.

Birch Bay has a rich history that goes back thousands of years, and in fact Captain George Vancouver in the Discovery on his Expedition in 1792 landed on Cottonwood Beach with his fellows including Peter Puget (Sound), Joseph Whidbey ( Island) & Joseph Baker (Mt). Factual legend has it that Captain Vancouver stopped in Birch Bay during 1792 Expedition and the Admiralty used the Black Birch Trees to brew beer, a common staple on the long voyage- they named Birch Bay after the same tree. We had a lovely and quiet family vacation over the new year. The host provided all the amenities we needed and we even found a nice dog bed under the queen bed that our German Shepard loved. Will stay here again!
We were up In birch bay to get married on October 4th. This was the perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle of getting ready for that and also relaxing after.
It was a great summer time stay at the Blue Heron!
The beach is close. Nice place to go for a run, or a nice walk along the shoreline at Birch Bay. The town of Blaine is just 5-10 minutes away. Marine Park is a beautiful shoreline park there.
