I had my wallet stolen, yet had physical cash from my bank to pay deposit for the night but thrown out into the street at night and forced to go home early while my bank was investigating these people who took my bank card testing it at a grocery store. Absolutely no empathy. Outrageous treatment.

We booked a family style room that was 2 bunk beds (4 beds in total). The room was L shape and pretty tight. One either had to sit on their bed or sit on the single stool that was avaliable. I found climbing to the top bunk best left to a younger person. Bathroom was clean, and roomy. The price for 4 nights compared to other hotels was excellent. The rooftop is very prettyat night and we used the pool once. The staff are extremely friendly. I would stay here again.

Dissappointing

Disappointing, not able to accommodate most of our requests. Dog friendly but can’t offer a water bowl in case we forget own? Phone in the room doesn’t work and they don’t seem phased. Up charged twice for early check in, wouldn’t listen when I argued. Won’t be back. Only good part is the location.

I felt very safe staying by myself in this hotel. The room was also clean and neat. The lobby is beautiful as well as their rooftop. Personnel was nice, valet was easy to use and I was able to leave my bags at check out with ease to go eat in the surrounding area before leaving Los Angeles. Ultimately, I would recommend staying here.

The location is great, the lobby area and coffee bar are lovely, the rooms however are sad, very basic and dirty. The floor of our quad room was so filthy we had to get extra towels to lay on them. There was also blood on the bunk bed frame.

I was pretty surprised when I got to the hotel and they charged me an extra $97 for a service fee for 3 nights. When I booked it, it said everything was already paid, so I wasn’t expecting any extra charges. If I knew the total would be that much more, I probably would’ve picked a different hotel for the same price. Also didn’t love that when I got drinks on the rooftop, they already added 18% tip and almost $3 per person for staff insurance. I usually leave a tip, but all these hidden fees just felt annoying and kind of shady. The room itself was nice, but the area around the hotel isn’t great — lots of homeless people around and it smelled like pee outside.

This is a hard hotel to review because it's an excellent value and in a way, is what it is. The lobby area and staff are great. Definitely hip vibes. And it's surrounded in DTLA by nice quick service options like Sweetgreen, Calif Chicken Cafe, Starbucks, a nice french pastry shop, Whole Foods, etc. BUT it is still DTLA, which means it's gritty and colorful and a bit stinky. Just how that part of the city is. And in the Freehand itself, you can't escape that it's an upscale hostel, with people walking through the hallway with dop kits and semi-prison vibes in the upstairs hallways. My corner king room was huge and an EXCELLENT value. But it's definitely has an urban hostel vibe and more like an Ace Hotel than anywhere else I've stay in its military minimalism. I'd stay there in a pinch on a budget again, for sure. But would not bring my family.

Minus the wifi, signal waa weak this time around and caused problems with syncing audio to video with my firestick. Movies eventually were off sync and made movies, Youtube unwatchable
