We do not allow pets of any kind. If a pet is brought into the home, then we will contact Airbnb/VRBO immediately to cancel the reservation. This is a zero-tolerance policy. Please note that some guests specifically look for rentals that do not allow pets due to their allergies. I myself am very allergic to dogs & cats. Violating this policy is not only against the rules but is also immoral.
We do not allow events or parties of any kind. We have a strict 18 guest maximum and do not allow any more than that number in the house at any time. For this reason, we ask that all guest entering the house are included on the reservation. If the house appears to be holding more than 18 guests then we will check the ring camera. If we find the occupancy is exceeded on the camera then we will immediately contact Airbnb/VRBO to cancel the rest of the reservation without refund. Additionally, an extra $500 cleaning fee will be assessed. This policy is zero tolerance. The house was built in the 60s and for this reason we have concerns about the pluming if more than 18 guests are present. Unfortunately, these rules were implemented because it is something we have dealt with in the past. Please note this property does have a ring camera at the entrance.
This house is very unique in its build and layout. Included below is more history on the home and architecture, as well as an in-depth description of the layout. During our renovation of the house, we tried to keep as much of the original house and components as possible. For this reason their may be some quirks with the ornamental door knobs/handles & faucets. We find that the beauty & uniqueness of the original fixtures to be worth dealing with these quirks!
This is the destination for Family Reunions in Southern WV! The Amherst Retreat was designed by architect E.T. Bogges in the mid 1960's as a residence for Mr and Mrs. J. S. Lewis. The home was built on the cliffs overlooking the New River Gorge at Arbuckle Creek. The home is currently wrapping up a complete renovation from top to bottom. We have installed new roof, HVAC, electrical, drywall, floors, lighting, appliances, furniture, and thousands of hours of elbow grease to restore the home to its original glory. The mansion was built using nothing but the finest materials from around the globe. The siding is redwood and stone. The doors are mahogany. The cabins are wormy chestnut. The house has marble fireplaces, countertops and showers. Expensive doorknobs and bathroom brass fixtures are throughout the house.
The kitchen is over 1,000 square feet and is lined with the original Wormy Chestnut cabinets, large food prep island, handmade French fixtures, Italian marble counter tops, and updated with all new Samsung appliances and a a custom concrete deep sink. There is a table that seats eight opposite the cooking area along the glass wall with one of many beautiful views of the gorge. There is also a dining room with a table and chairs that accommodate ten. There is a second chefs kitchen and pantry with an extra set of stainless steel appliances for catering or large groups. The kitchen area alone is an amazing place to congregate and visit with friends and family.
The Main Dinning and Living Rooms are a combined 1,300 square feet with multiple exits to the front patio garden or the 1,400 square foot back deck. These grand rooms have been renovated with new hardwood floors and furniture that will seat a small army. We were able to refinish the elaborate trim, the piano key crown molding, the Italian Marble Mantle , and an original silk oriental mural.
The upper level is linked my brightly lit tile hallways guiding guests to four bedrooms. Three bed rooms share one and one half baths and will accommodate many different sleeping arrangements with each room having their own pull out couch. The Master bedroom is fit for a king or a mid size family. The ensuite bath has a cedar sauna, walk in closet, his and hers marble vanities, and a sunken marble tub that is large enough for an entire family as well. All the fixtures and faucets in the upper level baths and outfitted with mid century Phylrich brass details that have been refinished by a local jeweler.
The lower level is accessed by a spiral stairway of the kitchen and has multiple entry points from the south side of the property. There are two bedrooms with a private bath and a kids bunk room with plenty of freestyle bedding arrangements.

Temperature control between rooms was a bit difficult due to the size of the home. The home was impressively fully stocked with all necessities. The host was prompt with any questions or concerns we had during our stay. The home is conveniently located to area attractions.
This place was awesome! 10 20 year old adults who took a trip to the area for rafting and needed a large house to stay in. The kitchen set up was all we could have asked for and we appreciated the extra fridge space. The views from the decks were amazing at all times of the day and the house itself was a lot of fun to explore. The hot tub was in great condition and perfectly ready for us upon arrival. All the beds were comfy and the A/C and internet were great. Very close to plenty of restaurants and rafting locations giving us short drives during the trip. Housekeeping was very prompt when responding to questions regarding checkout procedures which was wonderful. Definitely worth the money and I will consider this place for any future trips to this area.
Our group enjoyed the space of the home and the amazing view from the porch as well as all the great outdoor activities close by. The house has some very outdated areas, but looks like remodeling is happening in phases as some areas looked to have been recently updated. The house was not as clean as we would have expected. None of the furniture had been swept under in quite awhile and the yard needed to be weeded/trimmed especially on the walkway. Overall though it was a lovely stay and I wish the owners luck.
The property is older, but as expressed in the listing. The neighborhood is nothing like you would expect getting to the property, but once at the property, amazing, very secluded. Loved watching the fog rise up through the valleys. If you like tree frogs, they will sing you to sleep at night. This is the first place our group of 18 stayed that had a properly stocked kitchen that could accommodate this number of people. There were extra towels, bedding linens and more than one dish towel. Thank you property owners!Three of the bathrooms/showers were ensuites, which was a little challenging for such a large group, but very manageable if you had 6 couples. Host communication was very prompt and much appreciated.
We were there to motorcycle and Miata around the hills. Weâre old guys and this house was perfect for us. Lots of rooms, appliances good, very clean. Great views off the deck and from kitchen.
My family and I travel to the mountains every year for spring break. And I can honestly say this location had the best view of any we have seen! The house is huge. Itâs a combination of old country home (used to belong to a coal barron) with a splash of modern. Hot tub fits 5 comfortably and also comes with a view. Would recommend for anyone looking to stay close to hiking trails and Mountain views.
Enjoyed this beautiful home for the weekend. Place was very clean and accurate. One downside I would say is the shower heads are not that great. Not a huge issue but overall the house was wonderful.
Last minute booking - death in family and needed a space for large family
The listing shows large, clean bedrooms and bathrooms.
When our family arrived at the property it had not been cleaned from the previous group staying.
We were staying at this house because there was a death in the family and wanted to be together and not at a hotel. Our group organized and everyone stepped up buying cleaning supplies, changing beds and washing dishes.
We contacted the owner and they took hours to reply. We did end up getting one of the three nights stay refunded but it did not help with the emotional stress we had already on us. There were a number of things broken (including the spiral stairs) which could be a huge safety factor. The views were great, there were backup bedding supplies and large living room spaces for family to be together.
Our family could not have been more pleased with the house and accommodations! We loved the open space and beautiful view! Paul, the owner was a gracious host and met all our needs. We would highly recommend this rental for family vacations. Definitely a little bit of heaven in West Va.
The location was excellent because we went to Ace Adventure several
Times and it is only 15 minutes away. The house was big enough for our family of 13 to have their own bedrooms and a nice big kitchen. The grill nearest the kitchen door had to be lit with a lighter as the igniter didnât work, and the front burners flamed big but the back burners didnât work at all. There are no towel bars to hang hand towels in the bathrooms. Very few towel bars for bath towels. It really needs an exterminator for wasps, wolf spiders, ants, and mice. Found all of those animals there. Bathroom shower drains were extremely slow. Some door latches only closed when locked. Lots of maintenance issues, but overall it was comfortable.
I was under the impression that the place was ok for my MS friend.IT WAS NOT! He was in a wheelchair and had a terrible time getting around the house. The tubs were all sunk and had no safety features to get in and out of them. Very unsuitable for a group 65 to 75 years old! We will not be back.
