Terrace house between S. Marco and Biennale
The district
The house is located in the Castello district, near Campo Bandiera e Moro (or della Bragora), a few steps from the so-called "Vivaldi church", and the San Zaccaria vaporetto stop. It is a few meters from the Riva degli Schiavoni, following which in about five minutes you can reach Piazza San Marco on one side, and the Arsenale and the Biennale Gardens on the other.
Nearby there are two supermarkets for shopping (in Calle dei Greci), and various shops.
The neighborhood is still alive and inhabited by Venetians, with bars and shops frequented by residents, much more than by tourists - which never fail in Venice.
Antonio Vivaldi was born in the adjacent Bandiera e Moro field (who knows maybe in the part of our building that overlooks it) and there is the church where he was baptized. In the Church of the PietĂ , Vivaldi for many years held the position of violin master, then master of choir and concerts, dedicating himself to educating the daughters of Choro in music and bel canto.
The church of the PietĂ overlooks the Riva degli Schiavoni, one of the most beautiful promenades in the world (where the Hotel Danieli is to be understood); from there in five minutes on foot you will be in San Marco square. Or in the opposite direction in ten minutes you will reach the Biennale or the Arsenale.
A tour in the surroundings
The closest vaporetto stop is San Zaccaria, get off and to the right (east), pass a single bridge and turn left after the Chiesa della PietĂ . At the far right and you will arrive home - you can't miss the little bridge that crosses the street that leads to the terrace from the living room.
If you get lost, ask for Danieli.
If you want to take a relaxing walk out of the crowds, follow the Riva degli Schiavoni eastwards and walk to the gardens of San'Elena, where tourists rarely meet and the few taverns are full of people who live here.
Other things to highlight
There is no air conditioning, in July and August it can be a little warm, the old house built with thick walls is always cool enough and you always sleep well at night.
Obviously in winter the house is well heated.
History
Baroque building of the eighteenth century, with frescoed ceilings, original furniture and flooring.
A walkway (covered by a wisteria plant) crosses the Calle della PietĂ and allows access to a large terrace with pergola, which overlooks a private garden.
The apartment covers approximately two hundred square meters and has two bedrooms.
The building to which it belongs belongs to our family for more than a century. We kept the furnishings as they were when the last truly Venetian great aunt lived there, adapting systems and bathrooms; since unfortunately none of the family lives in Venice anymore, we rent it, but only for short periods because we still love to come to this enchanting city.
The calle della PietĂ 3629 building has been documented since the eighteenth century, as the baroque proportions of the windows reveal, but it was renovated in the nineteenth century, an era to which the neo-Gothic four-light windows in white Istrian stone on both sides date.
The original structure is that of the Venetian merchant house, with a large warehouse for goods on the ground floor (now converted into an entrance and laundry room) and a "noble floor" on the first floor, which is accessed by a staircase (there is no elevator ).
The furnishings date back to the renovation carried out just before 1904, with late 19th-century eclectic Viennese furniture - made to measure for this house - with some concessions to Art Nouveau (in the stained glass window dividing the main room / lounge in two) and the Art Deco, in whose style the master bedroom is fully furnished. The original furniture and flooring has been intentionally preserved by the family in all the rooms, except of course for the living room sofas, mattresses, kitchen equipment and appliances (refrigerator, washing machine, microwave oven, television), which they are modern. Heating is present; there is no air conditioning.
Some ceilings are frescoed with late nineteenth-century eclectic decorations, with landscapes, flowers and grotesques.
The large entrance hall now houses the dining table, which can be extended to accommodate up to a maximum of eight people, otherwise it is possible to eat on the marble table in the kitchen or, throughout the summer, under the pergola of the Terrace.
The apartment has two bedrooms, a kitchen, a hall, a sitting room, an entrance hall, a main bathroom (with bath tub), a service bathroom (with shower, remade fifteen years from scratch. fa) and a laundry room with washing machine.
The beds are four: a double bed (but with separate mattresses) in one room and two separate beds in the second bedroom. For emergencies, 2 other camp beds are available in a small room (very small and without windows).
A walkway (covered by a wisteria plant) crosses the Calle della PietĂ and allows access to a large terrace with pergola, which overlooks a private garden, and can be used in the beautiful season for dining (it is equipped with table and "garden" chairs, and light for the night, however it is recommended not to make noise, especially after ten in the evening, so as not to disturb the neighbors).
Guest access
The whole house is accessible, as well as the terrace which can be accessed by crossing a bridge over the narrow Calle della PietĂ .
The terrace overlooks a small hidden garden, always owned by us, but not accessible because it is rented together with the property below.
The terrace is nestled in the middle of other houses, as often in Venice you are close to other families and people are very friendly and welcoming, but please respect their rest and intimacy and do not make noise on the terrace.
Interaction with guests
I live in Milan, my cousins and cousins help me with the rent, but on the spot we have a trusted person who has maintained the house for many years and who will welcome you and help you with any problem.
