Clean, small, comfortable...economical.

Pros: Clean, economical, well equipped.
Cons: Thermostat controls were ineffective, but the time of the year and the ability to open a window made it a non-issue. If it had been summer weather...
Location: Walking access to many places, most notable the castle and Kyoto imperial palace, but we don't mind walking a mile.
If you are looking for a a place to comfortably spend the night after a full day of local touring, this could be a good place for you. A good place for me to take my teenage son and a father-son trip, but not probably where I would go with my wife for a romantic getaway. We explored all day, took a shower, crashed, got up and repeated!

Dated hotel with convenient location

Pros: Convenient location and helpful staff.
Cons: Clean out the mold in the bathroom.
Location: Close to bus stations, Omiya subway station, and Shijo-Omiya electric rail (not JR) to Arashiyama.
Visited Kyoto during the peak autumn season (mid-Nov.). Very few hotels were available, so we had limited choices. ARK Hotel has a convenient location (Shijo Omiya) and very helpful staff. But the hotel is very dated. They use real keys that you must leave at the front desk when you go out. The bathroom is moldy. The air conditioner doesn't work well. And I would rather skip the free breakfast and buy food outside.
