As a first timer in Japan, this Ryokan is perfect and exceed all my expectations. The staff was more than friendly and helped us understand some stuff in English when I had difficulties with Japanese. The tatami room we had was well equipped and we had a booklet with all the necessary information for us to work out our trip around the Ryokan. Funny enough, thanks to them, we found a few we didn't have planned to visit but did in the end (and bought some souvenirs). If there was an option to give 6 stars over 5, I would. I strongly recommend this Ryokan for everything I mentioned and the fair price you get.
I very rarely give ratings this low but let me explain. The location of the Ryokan has the highest marks from me. It is very walkable to the Nishiki market in a quiet neighborhood. The lowest marks comes from the service. Don't get me wrong. The staff was pleasant, but most were not very competent regarding our reservations and the check in and out process. We had three rooms and our bags were all mixed up, which resulted in our having to switch rooms and bags. They also couldn't get the invoices correct upon checkout. I want to emphasize that they were all very friendly, but they just need additional training. Pierre especially, I felt, tried so hard to make things right, but again, even our invoices after we left were not correct. The Ryokan itself was very nice; the futon mattresses were very comfortable. I recommend NOT taking advantage of the bath. Save yourself the 500Y and skip it. It is just a large bath and not a traditional furo bath that I've experienced in the past. And regardless, it only fits one person comfortably.
The staff is stellar!! They go out of their way to make things so easy for you. After 26 hours travel time and a sick partner, they went out of their way to help me. And Iâm confident this is how they treat everyone all the time. I couldnât say enough nice things about the staff! So friendly, helpful and very fluent in English! The room was immaculately clean, and the comforter was so warm and high quality! I was incredibly impressed and hope to stay with you again!
This is a fantastic little hotel that gives one a taste of the traditional Ryokan experience. The staff was extremely helpful and welcoming, especially Pierre-san at the front desk. We stayed here three nights just before Christmas.
Rooms were clean, large and quiet. Near the Nishiki Market. Large common room and roof deck for DIY meals or cocktails. Highly recommend.
The hotel room we stayed in isnât big enough for 3 people. Although we were looking for a traditional ryokan experience there was very limited space. We had to take turns getting ready and packing because the area for luggage is the same as the walking area/ clothing area. There is no microwave or eating area. 3 futons on the ground took up the entire hotel room and it essentially felt like camping. There is no furniture besides the porch chair. Itâs very small, after 4 nights we were more than ready to leave. Not worth the price at all, location was great though
Our stay at this ryokan was enjoyable yet lacking. First off, the included breakfast was, as we were told upon arrival, not actually included and was 13 000 yen per person and only available upon reservation with very restrictive time slots. The reason we were given for not providing the included breakfast (which was a major reason I booked here) was that ânobody uses Expedia anymore so we havenât changed itâ even though âwe have 3 reservations from Expedia every week.â In addition, we were charged for the use of the private bath without being informed it was an extra charge and we were charged for laundry? This âlaundryâ was just the regular changing of our sheets and towels, which we either had to fully opt out of for the entire stay or be charged extra for? The reasoning this establishment gave for everything was strange. Also, the room was quite nicked up and dark. The staff did their best within the weird parameters around everything and the room was comfortable, but I would not return. I would not recommend you stay here.
Lovely place with excellent staff making for a wonderful, authentic experience during our stay at Kyoto. Plus, very centralized to many locations we wanted to visit whether it he by foot, by bus, or by train
We had a traditional Japanese room, and it was a great experience. The mattress was too thin for us on the first night, but we were offered extra mattresses for the second night and we were comfortable. Highlights were the amazing staff, and delicious Japanese breakfast.
