We really enjoyed our stay at Yugen Kyoto Shijo. The hotel is very new and it shows, with everything being in great condition. Very comfortable mattress, nice big bath in the room (so big it takes 30 minutes to fill), and the rooms are fairly large for a Japanese hotel. Breakfast was good quality but the selection is not huge, however we were happy with it. The location is good for walking to many restaurants and bars, and there are bus stops and subway stations within reasonable distance.

The hotel room itself is beautiful, clean, and comfortable, but our experience at breakfast on our final morning completely changed how we felt about our stay. I arrived at the buffet in the yukata something that has been normal at every other hotel we’ve stayed at in Japan and we greeted the staff in Japanese with a good morning. The young staff member immediately said, “You need to change go change There was no good morning, and no explanation. We were not told whether the issue was my clothing, my partner’s clothing, or both. The staff member then walked away, leaving us confused and embarrassed while his colleague then said then it was my yukata and apologized. This rule was never mentioned at check-in, in the room, or anywhere else. Had it been explained kindly or clearly, I would have not worn that. This is a complete lack of hospitality and communication. Because of how uncomfortable and unwelcome we felt, we ultimately did not eat any breakfast at all, despite having paid for it. When we asked about the bento box option at the front desk that was offered instead, we were told it was not available so we went back to our room and did not have breakfast. Five staff members and not one person tried to resolve the situation. This was our last night in Japan, and it was deeply upsetting for the experience to end this way. There are many beautiful hotels in Japan, but service and hospitality are what make guests return and feel welcome. We did not feel that.

Beautiful hotel in the perfect location of Kyoto. Close walk to Pontocho Alley & Gion, but also the best spot to walk the quiet streets in the morning. Large rooms with a classic Japanese look. The nicest staff as well. Highly recommend!

My fiancé and I had the best stay at Yugen. All the staff were extremely helpful and welcoming. The hotel was very clean and well-maintained. The location is perfect; it’s centrally located, close to Shijo station, and walking distance to so many shops, bars, and restaurants (and Nishiki Market!). I think the best part of the hotel is the spa area. I used the sauna, hot bath, and cold plunge every day, and it really enhanced my stay. It was so relaxing and recharging. Highly recommend staying at this beautiful place

Very happy with our stay here. We stayed in a room with a big private bath. The hotel and area are very quiet, a welcome sanctuary in busy Kyoto. There are several convenience stores nearby and bus stops which can take you to the main attractions. When we visited the restaurant was under construction, bento boxes were delivered to the room for breakfast. The hotel helped us ship our bags to our next stop in Osaka. All staff members we encountered were polite and helpful. A very comfortable stay, highly recommended

I think the hotel is newly opened and the staffs may need a bit more training especially for foreigners who don't speak Japanese. They were extremely gracious and are trying all their best but the communication was a bit clunky.

I recently stayed at this hotel, and it was truly one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. From the moment I arrived, the staff made me feel genuinely welcomed. Check-in was smooth, warm, and efficient. Staff assisted with our luggage handling/forwarding. The room was spotless, beautifully designed, and incredibly comfortable. The bed felt like sleeping on a cloud, and the attention to detail—from the high-quality linens to the thoughtful amenities—really stood out. Housekeeping did an amazing job throughout my stay. The hospitality here is unmatched. Every staff member I interacted with was attentive, kind, and eager to ensure I had everything I needed. It’s rare to feel this taken care of while traveling. The facilities were equally impressive. The onsen was exceptional. The location was perfect, with easy access to local attractions, yet quiet enough to relax and unwind.
