Rosegill is also within an hour of Colonial Williamsburg, Yorktown, and Jamestown, making it an excellent base for exploring Virginia history.
THE HISTORY OF ROSEGILL
Rosegill is one of Virginiaâs oldest and most historically significant estates, with origins dating back to 1649. The property is listed on both the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register.
Over centuries, the estate evolved into the remarkable riverfront home that stands today, blending colonial history with the relaxed beauty of Virginiaâs Tidewater region.
GOOD TO KNOW
The property is a working agricultural farm, so you may occasionally see farm equipment or hear seasonal farming activity.
The fireplaces are decorative only and may not be used.
The pool is unheated and open seasonally from May 15âSeptember 15.
The property includes waterfront areas, docks, and water equipment that require caution and active supervision of children.

We thoroughly enjoyed the house, decorations, property, views, and history! My children were sorry to leave! Thanks for sharing this historic property with us.
We had an amazing time! Our group was 10 adults and 3 babies. The kitchen was perfect to make big meals and we loved spending time out at the pool. The lawn was amazing for yard games. Couldnât say enough good things.
All members of the family loved this house. There was something for everyone. We all love to be outside. There was swimming, hiking, fishing, bicycling, and kayaking. We also toured Williamsburg and Jamestown, so there is so much to do. The rooms were spacious and very comfortable. We only wish that we had planned on more days to stay.
We stayed at Rosegill in 2023 for Thanksgiving and loved it so much, we went back again this year. The property just has a wonderful feel to it. It's well cared for and the owners and caretakers do an excellent job taking care of their guests as well.
We spent the week at Rosegill with 3 generations and it was one of the most unique, memorable properties we have ever stayed at. We loved the little town of Urbanna and learned so much history around the area. Thank you for the memories!
WOW! Rosegill surpassed our expectations. Such a beautiful home with gorgeous grounds that have been well cared for. The history of the grand home was fascinating. We enjoyed walking to the secluded beach, kayaking in the accessible lower lake and canyoning on the lovely upper lake, where we encountered turkeys, deer, osprey and bald eagles! We were able to enjoy the refreshing pool a couple days and that was such a treat!
The home was very well stocked and comfortable which made our vacation all the more wonderful. The owners have an attention to detail which made the stay very relaxing. Rosegill provided a launching point for our colonial adventures, but also a retreat at the end of a busy day of sightseeing. Really, the best of both worlds.
Our communication with the owner and innkeeper was always pleasant and they were very helpful with our questions. We cannot recommend this property highly enough! We look forward to visiting again!
We stayed at Rosegill with extended family for Thanksgiving, it was more perfect than we could have imagined. Beautiful house with a great cozy feel, even though a large house. Grounds are amazing and they were so good about helping us with anything and everything. Highly recommend a stop by Urbanna Trading while there - great wine and gourmet goods.
Iâve driven by Rosegill almost all of my life, was born in Urbanna, but never set foot on the property until our vacation. You feel like youâve stepped back in time with the history and beauty of the home. There were 8 of us so the beautiful dining room table was perfect! Excellent updates in the kitchen with all the amenities youâll need. We spent the evening by the bonfire, roamed and explored as much of the property as possible and slept peacefully every night. As my family said during our goodbyes, this was the âbest property and best family vacation everâ!
Thank you again!
We got married in nearby Wake, VA and Rosegill was the perfect location for out of town family to come and stay for the weekend. It was gorgeous and I wish I could have stayed longer and enjoyed the space more.
Magnificent home!!! Acres of privacy as well as amazing & beautiful places to hangout inside & outside. Three minute walk to dock/creek. Kids spent endless hours of fun each day crabbing, fishing, swimming, kayaking & exploring - crabs đŠ every night for dinner.
Family gathered on the amazing sun porch in awe of the surrounding beauty, the wildlife and the Rapahonnick River - enjoyed all our meals on porch as well - Super!!
Best was no real interest in technical devices - a family of 10 (adults & children)
Truly memorable!! Look forward to a return in the future - kept everyone entertained! Canât say enough good things - hardly ever left the property.
Red Bank NJ Family
Our three generation family had a great stay at Rosegill. The historic property is beautiful and you are immediately struck by the huge scale of the property and house. Our communication with the innkeeper and property owner was impressive. We rented both a golf cart and a boat during our visit which I highly recommend. The fishing at the upper lake was fantastic. The house was well provisioned and local restaurants were convenient and our meals were great. Make sure to get some local seafood during your stay. Our family spent a lot of time at the swimming pool which was clean and convenient to the house.
We had a great trip to Rosegill for the long July 4, 2023 weekend. We even had the pleasure of meeting owners Strother and Evie who are welcoming and gracious.
The property managers Megan and Rikki could not have been more helpful or responsive. Before we arrived, Megan and Rikki helped us arrange for deliveries of wine, a golf cart, and flowers. Any time we reached out, they were available.
Rosegill is not only historic, but clean and spacious. Our guests all commented that they didn't expect a historic house to be so comfortable--but we were all amazed at just how comfortable the house is. And the house has amazing AC! Although we were 8 adults, there was plenty of space. We enjoyed using the river porch and dining room for our meals. The pool was perfect. We launched a sailboat and paddleboards from the boathouse. The beach is gorgeous, and we enjoyed our beach walks. There is lots of wildlife to observe. We recommend the golf cart as an easy way to tour the large property.
We are very familiar with Urbanna, and we particularly enjoyed our meal at Something Different. It was great to be so close to the Urbanna Food Market and Food Lion. We are also huge fans of Urbanna Trading Company where we purchased all of our wine and champagne. We even had moonlight and magnolias during our stay!
We can't thank you enough for a wonderful time, and we highly recommend Rosegill for your family-friend vacation.
Our family spent a week at Rosegill and we are looking forward to returning. The home is beautiful with lots of space for all, and is a masterpiece historical home with the necessary modern conveniences. The farm, lakes and river are spectacular.
We did a lot of fishing and crabbing, swam in the pool, kayaked on the river, enjoyed the swing, and were picked up at the Rosegill dock for a sunset cruise.
Some also did trips to Williamsburg, Richmond and Busch Gardens, which are all about an hour away.
The nature, animals and views are breathtaking. We saw a sand crane, egret, raccoon, rabbits, turtles, and hawks, just to name a few.
Everything [even the beds and bedding!] was exceptional and it's a very special place to create family memories. The host and inn keepers were excellent and helped plan and make this trip very special. Looking forward to visiting Rosegill again.
What an amazing opportunity to enjoy a historic home in this storied area of our country. There was so much to see and do in the area that we didn't leave much time to enjoy the house! And there's SO MUCH house and property to enjoy! I can only imagine how nice it is in the summer, when you can use the pool, and when the water in the river and lake aren't so cold. Conveniently located close to town, but still private and quiet. The owner and caretaker were both great to work with. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay!
I found the residence and surrounding property completely restful and delightfully quite - hadn't remembered what the lack of noise sounded like. with notably the refrigerator being the biggest background noise. The view was exceptional and the old trees exceptional. You could feel the history and daydream about the gentile lifestyle coupled with the horrors of slavery. The online listing I found a little bit of a bait and switch, since nightly rates were based on Tuesday and Wednesday without creating a full picture of the cost, slightly disheartening - my fault for not paying attention in the end.
All the basics were exceptionally clean - since everything was that perfect I was slightly perturbed by the dust collections in the door jams and windows.
Beautiful, spacious property. Plenty of space for our multi generational family to spread out. Beautiful grounds. The family especially enjoyed the pool. Excellent communications and support from property manager
What a beautiful historic property! The location is perfect and the house was wonderful. We would recommend to anyone wanting a quiet relaxing vacation!
This home and property offer so much; the upstairs has the bedrooms with more open seating areas, and downstairs has several rooms with comfortable spaces for conversations, reading, games, toys TV etc. Thereâs an air conditioned sunroom with plenty of chairs and a large picnic style table. There are two dining rooms and a large kitchen. The swimming pool was used several times a day. We rented a golf cart to explore the property, went kayaking and fishing on the lakes, explored the beach and picked delicious blackberries. We rented a boat and used the boat barn which made that easy. And we caught crabs every day and enjoyed eating them for dinner. A great vacation spot for sure! The owner was attentive and helpful.
My family recently had the great pleasure of spending a week at Rosegill and it was nothing short of magical. The house and surrounding property was perfect for our annual family getaway. The ages of our group spanned three generations and every single one of us had the best time. The home itself is spacious and well-appointedâoffering a glimpse into the past, but with all the modern amenities you could ever need. The property is equally stunning. We spent our days exploring, crabbing, fishing, swimming, and relaxing. We ate every meal on the sun porch that overlooks the river. I canât recommend Rosegill enough! It's perfect.
This property is not only gorgeous, but is filled with history, nature and something for every one. We had 3 generations stay and everyone had something to enjoy at all times - whether it was swimming in the pool, exploring the grounds and beach, kayaking on the lake, fishing off the dock or even relaxing on the sun porch watching nature unfold before your eyes (eagles, hawks, ospreys, even owls and geese!). We usually go on a beach vacation, but by mid-week the kids are on their phones. The kids did not touch their phones until 9pm each night! They were that enthralled with all this property has to offer! We also brought a badminton net and played wiffle ball on the sprawling lawn. Would definitely recommend the golf cart(s). And a boat ride with Captain Phil where we boarded right from the dock on the creek! Owners and inn keeper very responsive. Highly recommend for a family vacation.
We gathered for my parent's 50th anniversary with ages 18 months to 80 years old - there was absolutely something for everyone. The little ones enjoyed the pool, beach, rabbit spotting and running with kite on the expansive lawn. While my parents enjoyed watching it all from the comforts of the sun room and the sun deck. Be sure to arrange naturalist tour and sunset cruise in advance - both a wonderful addition to the holiday.
From the house and pool, to the beach and lakes, to the dock and the swing out front; everything we needed to both relax and be entertained was within our reach.
The owners were extremely helpful and communication was excellent from the start. They provided contacts and information for restaurants, boat charters, the much needed golf cart rental, the history of the property, and so much more.
Definitely a five star vacation location and an exciting history lesson all in one.
Our experience from start to finish was excellent. Communication between owner/ property manager/myself was quick and efficient. The house was perfect for everyone in our family. Rosegill had everything we needed. The beach was perfect, the gated pool was very much appreciated. The stocked kitchen, bedrooms, bathrooms, laundry room, toy room, extra towels and pool toys, additional fridge all met our needs and exceeded expectations. The big yard was great for the kids to play in between beach and pool time. The owner shared the contact info for the golf carts, which was a great addition to our trip so we could easily transport everyone to and from the beach. Although, vehicles could be used to travel to the beach, the golf carts kept sand from being brought into the cars - and are more fun to drive! Also, the beach is within walking distance, but the golf carts made it that much easier. The sunroom is where we spent most of our indoor time and where we ate all of our meals on the massive table picnic style table. There was so much to do, we could have used an additional day or two to pack in all that Rosegill has to offer. The little town of Urbanna has AMAZING fresh seafood options and is conveniently located a short 6-8 min drive away. I could probably write a short novel on everything Rosegill has to offer. We are already talking about booking with Rosegill again next year!
