I rarely leave bad reviews, but The Commonwealth Hotel in Richmond, VA was a major letdown. While it was conveniently located near the Amtrak station and the courthouse, which was actually quite pretty, that was one of the only positives about the place. The rest of the experience was disappointing. The location felt oddly isolated and lacked anything walkable. The room had windows but faced a wall, which made it feel like a claustrophobic box. The elevators were tiny and slow, adding to the overall cramped feeling and giving the whole place a dated vibe. Amenities were extremely limited—don’t expect much beyond the bare minimum. For the price, at almost $250 a night, I expected far better.

Very central location right behind the state capitol. Room was great incl fridge & microwave. There's only valet parking (~$45/night extra), but they're pretty quick once you request your car. It's definitely a renovated older building, because the elevators are TINY.

Really neat location for one night stay but I wouldn’t stay again. The staff were very polite but the hotel seems to be somewhat mismanaged. The whole 7th floor reeked of marijuana both days we were there and was a huge turnoff. Couches in the lobby were really soiled and the valet needs some help. The rooms are their best asset, no complaints there.

One of the most unique properties I’ve ever found. The property is aged yet the furnishings, and fixtures modern. Our suite had what seemed like original doors that with age didn’t close quite right but yet that added to the charm of the place. Staff was amazing. Great location. Will stay again if we get back to Richmond.

No coffee

The valet was really nice and he took care of us . The front desk was also excellent.the problem occurred when we walked into the restaurant with our coffee from Starbucks. The server wouldn’t let us have our coffee there. Ok, so we left. The next day we try the restaurant for breakfast again.This time we had no coffee with us. We asked for decaf and were told they didn’t have any. So we left AGAIN. So what were we to do ?went to the front desk and the gentleman was so nice and apologetic and he agreed with us. Was this something the server made up or is it hotel policy ?

Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted by the valet, Eric, who is very friendly and helpful. The hotel is located in an excellent location, and most points of interest are within walking distance. The room was clean, comfortable and nicely decorated.

Property was terribly understaffed. Valet had one poor man running cars and it took way too long. Breakfast at restaurant also had one server and the kitchen was so slow. It took an hour to get a warm cinnamon roll-we had to beg for a to go container and run. All summed into us being late for an appointment. The staff was kind and apologetic-it was not their fault they did not have enough people. Facilities-the AC in our room would not bring the temperature below 75-it was uncomfortable to sleep. Could be a lovely property if they would invest in employees so visitors could enjoy their stay.
