The staff were not warm and comforting, most appeared unapproachable. Our room 420 had a damaged chandelier above the bed and it’s probably been that way for a while which is sad. We saw the same dirty dining ware outside the elevator on our floor the entire time we stayed there. The restaurant was mediocre at best. In 2025, the TVs should be upgraded to smart TVs by now. Upon arrival, our room smelled as if someone who cleaned the room spent some time using the bathroom. The library was sad and underwhelming. Breakfast was not offered and you have to pay to dine and eat breakfast, yet another expensive money grab. Overall, the Hawthorne hotel was disappointing, absolutely not worth the money, and sadly I will not be returning. This is upsetting as this was a bucket list of mine as I come to Salem yearly.

Hotel was historic and you could feel the rich Salem history inside! Beautiful sunset and sunrise from the 6th floor room! Hotel also offered 2 restaurants! Complimentary warm apple cider was a hit! Location was prime for tourist activities! Wonderful stay at Hawthorne! We will be back!

My daughter and I very much enjoyed our two-night stay at this charming old hotel. It was perfect for our first visit to Salem and the location couldn't have been better for exploring everything that Salem has to offer. The room with 2 queen beds was huge and so warm and inviting. It had obviously been part of something larger in its past life with 3 closets and 2 huge windows looking out to a park across the street. The bathroom had been quietly updated but kept its old charm with the black and white tile floor and old fixtures. We have stayed in other old hotels, so we were not deterred by having luke warm showers at the end of the day as everyone is taxing the supply of hot water at the same time. The food in both restaurants was wonderful and the wait staff was very attentive. I'm a morning coffee drinker, so it was hard to get out of bed, throw on some clothes and hope I didn't run into anyone as I snuck down to the lobby to get my morning fix as there are no coffee makers in the rooms. But they offered wonderful coffee, hot tea and hot chocolate and cardboard carrying trays so I loaded up! We so enjoyed our visit and will definitely be back! I'll take old charm with its idiosyncrasies over modern, characterless hotels any day.

The Hawthorne’s rich history, beauty & central location to all of Salem make it the ideal choice. The dining at the Nathaniel & The Tavern were delicious. The staff at the front desk & housekeeping were all very friendly and kind. I’d recommend anyone looking to stay in Salem to enjoy the rich history; begin at The Hawthorne Hotel.

Room was nice and clean. Firm bed, soft pillows, just how I like it. The Tavern was great, staff were all attentive. I was even 'carded' for a drink. Which I love because Im in my mid 30s and not many places card me still in my small town lol 😆 I didnt love that the room temp stayed at 71 degrees even after turning the thermostat up to 85, but it was still comfortable enough. I will for sure return! Also, no ghost activity other than feeling twice like someone was pressing down on my hip and leg while lounging on the bed. Will for sure come again when I return from the West Coast.

The room(s) for a single person are incredibly small with the shower actually in the bedroom rather than the bathroom. I have been here before so knew that was the case. I just could not get the water hot enough to shower. It is a lovely hotel but it rides on its reputation as historic and by contemporary standards is very average.
