Booked the Barcelo Colonial, was changed to Barcelo Beach. Was told that it was my travel agents fault. Was told there were no differences in these hotels. Spoke with others that this happened to too. We had 2 rooms, one of the rooms' key would work 2x and then not work. We went through over 10 keys, many unnecessary trips to the lobby. Was told that if we put by our phones next to our phone, the keys would erase. I had both room keys together and this only happened with the one room. No customer service at all at the front desk, put blame on someone or something else.

The only disappointment was the inability to make restaurant reservations in advance. We were looking forward to enjoying the different restaurant options as promoted vs buffet every morning and night (tho no complaints about the food at the buffet), but even tho we attempted to book right after arrival, we were able to secure only two restaurant reservations.

We stayed in the center of the resort at the Colonial. We were near the tennis courts. We love pickleball and were able to book an early time each morning to play for an hour before it got too hot. They have drawn the pickleball lines on the tennis court. Food was great! Loved all the fresh fruit. Staff is so accommodating and friendly. They are experiencing staffing shortages like the rest of the world so be patient. Stuck to absolute and club soda as the blended drinks were not tasty. They tasted like chemicals instead of fruit flavor. The staff worked tremendously hard at cleaning the seaweed away each day. The shows were fun and the Jaguar disco played great dance music. This was our sixth visit and we still loved it.

Barcelo is a wonderful resort. Our room was at the Maya Colonial, but we had access to other areas of the property. The accommodations are outstanding, but it’s the level of service provided by every member of the staff that makes Barcelo our favorite destination in Riviera Maya.
