The elevator service was poor. Building lost all water services during our stay, and the guest kitchen was severely undersized for the number of guests you had staying there.

It's a funky, unique hotel in a great location. Very classic atmosphere. It feels like you're stepping onto the 1940's.

We were very excited about staying at the Freehand. From the pictures it looked very "hip" and unique. The coffeeshop downstairs was a bonus. We were unfortunately, disappointed by the hotel. The room was very small and a little dark which wasn't a big turnoff. It looked much different than the pictures online. The biggest problem we had was that the mattress was very cheap and horribly uncomfortable. The springs literally felt like they might stab us when we rolled over. The other problem was that the Heating/Air unit was controlled remotely so the room was extremely hot over night and there was no way to shut it off or to turn the temperature down. We attempted to open a window, since it was a chill 20 degrees outside, but it caused the heat to come on. We we asked the staff about the room the next morning they were kind enough to switch us rooms to the opposite side of the building, however, the room was hot and miserable as well and the bed was just as uncomfortable. Also, maybe because it is an old building, the walls are a bit thin and you can hear other guests. Not as bad as the beds and heat, but the elevators are also very small and very slow. The bathrooms were cool.

Location couldn't have been better for us. The hotel has a parking arrangement with the ramp nextdoor that allowed us to park right there for a lower rate than the standard parking downtown. We never needed the car or a rail pass though. Everything was walking distance. Don't expect a silent stay. It is an older building. We were near the top floor but sierins and horns were heard all hours. The coffee shop and lobby are comfortable areas to hang out and breakfast was simple but sufficient. Staff was all friendly. I plan to return here!

This hotel was perfect for a few days in Chicago! The room was clean, bed was comfortable, and the room was far from the street so so quiet. The cafe down stairs was a fun place to relax. Loved my stay!

Cramped room. Super slow elevators. No mini fridge. No complimentary water ($8 a bottle!). And I am convinced the ringworm I got was from the room I was staying in. On the plus side, the location was pretty central.
