When we went to check in at the Elounda Olive Gardens, we were met with a notice on the door to ring their sister hotel, Elounda Residence. We were then informed that they had shut the apartments for the winter and we were now staying in the Elounda Residence. Although a better hotel, it was miles from the village and we had deliberately not chosen that hotel because of the location. It was on a very steep hill, with amazing views, but our room was the furthest away from the reception and pool areas, even higher up the hill. We are very sprightly 70 year olds, luckily, as anyone with walking difficulties would have struggled. We were on a self catering basis but most of the hotel was all inclusive, so it was a pain to have to get down to the village for breakfast and again for the evening meal. There was a shuttle service, but the last bus went at 5 pm.
Unless you want an all inclusive hotel, this one is not for you!
Our room was right on the main road through Elounda, front door was approx 10Ms from the road, not set back as shown on map. Motor bikes late at night & dustcarts empty the skips at about 6a.m. There were lots of new items there e.g. kettle, single burner hob, shower curtain, flower pots outside & the whole place was very clean. Nice complimentary toiletries but no hot water in the morning so couldn't use the bath or shower. It felt as though it was a bit of a work in progress with a temporary fix for the bathroom extractor fan. The only opening window was downstairs at the front, right by the road. No reception there you have to phone on arrival or walk up the hill to the sister site and then somebody comes down.
