This was exactly the space we needed after a small apartment in Athens. House is a nice size for 2 adults and 3 kids. Girls loved the yard and the kid toys provided. The pool was too cold to swim in much in May, but was nice to have. The location is great, it feels so private and remote, but is a short drive to some great beaches. It was nice to have a tub to bath the kids. A couple of things would have made my stay even better, a larger pillow selection, pillows were very firm; provide beach towels; a clothes dryer (washer worked well, just hard to line dry); and a dish washer (vacation is not the time for extra work). I know there are not a lot of online reviews, but in the house is an actual guest book with reviews going back to 2007, many guests have stayed multiple times. It really is a wonderful house and we were sad to leave.
The Villa Aloni exceeded all our expectations in terms of quality and facilities. We were looking for somewhere in "hidden Crete" and this property in Maza gave us a sense of rural remoteness but with access to the national road (and easy drives to Hania and Rethymnon) in 5 minutes. The villa was excellently equipped with every modern convenience (except a dishwasher which might have been an asset for a larger party). Everything worked effectively and when the kettle broke, this was replaced immediately. The swimming pool is on the small side but ideal for those who want a quick dip to cool down after a day's hiking or sunbathing. It was cleaned well and not over-treated with chemicals. We were praticularly impressed by the range of kitchen and bathroom items provided (soap, shampoo, washing powder, salt, pepper, kitchen towels, herbs) which made arrival very easy.
We enjoyed the privacy of the villa which is not overlooked by any other properties, and the gentle sounds of the adjoining houses with their chickens, ducks, turkeys and goats and the abundant birdsong.
Access from the road is by means of a short steep drive but the shaded parking space is on site. The road on which Villa Aloni stands is very quiet, ideal for a walk along into the countryside or down into the village of Maza where there are two (all day) local tavernas serving real Cretan dishes - no menu, what is available that day is cooked - within 5 minutes. There are no shops in the village but Vrysess is 10 minutes drive (or 45 minutes hot walk) away where there is a full range of services (supermarkets, tavernas, petrol stations, bakery, ice cream, bank etc).
Stefanos was a perfect landlord, looking after our every need and being available as necessary by text and email. He was as warmhearted, friendly and very generous (as we have found all Cretans to be),but quiet and unobtrusive when doing the pool and house cleaning.
Villa Aloni ticked every box for us. It became our "home" rather than a house we were renting. We were sad to leave and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a taste of real Crete.
Overall the villa is nice but itâs a bit tired and could do with some updating. The pillows were really uncomfortable and there were no bowls at all for breakfast cereal etc. I donât think the pool is cleaned enough, two out of the three of us have ear infections which may well be a result of swimming in it. As for the villa owner, Stefanos was very nice and always responded when I texted him. The dogs next door were barking a lot at night, sometimes continually which is hard to sleep through. I realise there is little he can do about this but it is a disturbance and we are a dog loving family. Overall we enjoyed our stay.
The well maintained villa has a nice view and offers privacy. The owner is very friendly and helpful. The villa was clean and had everything to make your stay comfortable. The pool is the cherry on the cake. The Villa Maza has a lovely small old church and a visit to the local taverne is mandatory if you want to enjoy local food.

Gorgeous - everything we hoped for
This is perfect. The villa is of recent build and in almost pristine condition: very well-equipped and kitted out. It was too cold to make more than token use of the pool in April, but still lovely to have it there. Fires both inside and out were lovely. Stephanos was enormously helpful, getting groceries to our specification before we arrived, and letting us stay until early afternoon on our last day: his mother (who lives in the village) also came round with a tray of homemade pies for us. The taverna in the village produces good food in alarming quantities. We spent most of our time in and around the house, or on the beach at Georgiopolis (less then 15 mins drive), but did find time to visit the stunning ruins at Aptera, half-way to Chania. We'd gladly come again: our boys, aged 5 and 8, both came home declaring it was the best holiday ever.

Villa Aloni September 2013
The villa was very clean and well equiped and the pool and garden well maintained. The only slight criticism was the size of the sheets on the bed but since the weather was warm it was not too great a problem. The location suited us well and we enjoyed several evenings at Costas and Voula's taverna after days touring between Georgiopolis and the south coast. The shops in Vrises provided all the food we needed for our stay and Stefanos visited twice to make sure we had everything we needed.

perfect place for holidays with kids
Our stay in Villa Aloni waw excellent. The description in the site was accurate, the information and service before arrival was great.
The villa was clean and had everything needed for a family. Our three kids had enough space to sleep and to play in side and espesialy outside the villa.
The owner was very descred in his visits and kept the place and pool clean.
We would recoment it to frieds and would like to visit it next year again.
The location of the villa was also very good, because you can go by foot to the village of Maza to dine at the local beautifull, tastfull taverna of Kostas which is next to an very old church. The nearest village for shopping is also very close (abt 5 minutes by car).
In general it is a good place to sea and visit southwest and northwest crete.
Thank you for the lovely stay!!!!

Great home base for discovering Crete
Villa Aloni is in a sweet little town in the hills of Crete, not far from the highway, but a world away. It served as a great base for exploring Chania, Rethymno, Hora Sfakia and smaller villages, like Vrisses. Maza itself is a very small town, with a huge heart. You will enjoy a special meal prepared by the family of the local taverna owner, Costas. The villa itself is comfortable and lovely. It is completely modern while seeming totally traditional. The grounds are beautiful and one of our favorite evenings was cooking over a wood fire and eating outdoors. Don't hesitiate for a moment to make this your home base for a Crete vacaation... even in the off season as we did. The owner was welcoming and helpful. Enjoy!

A beautiful location and a wonderful villa
The owner was there to meet us on our arrival to show us around and give us some information on the surrounding areas. The property is beautiful! Lovely pool, everything clean and tidy with little touches (e.g. teabags provided) that were very thoughtful.
Our favourite day was the Samaria Gorge walk, a long day but worth it! We also loved Elafonisi beach and Satvros beach. We would definitely recommend this to a couple like ourselves or a small group, as there was plenty of room.

luxury villa
I stayed in this villa for a week with a group of friends and can honestly say that the experience was delightful. The villa itself is with stunning views which can all be seen whilst swimming in the spacious pool. The rooms were immaculate, linens were new and fresh and the air conditioning was perfect. We particularly appreciated the quiet environment to which we returned every evening, after enjoying the traditional local Greek tavernas and nearby beaches. Overall I would definitely recommend this villa to anyone who wants to visit Greece and Crete for a relaxing and enjoyable experience!
