The Main House at Quinta das Colemias
Quinta das Colmeias is a private 10ha property with a working organic farm in Madeira with sheep, chicken and vegetables.
The Main House is a large four bedroom room house with a great verandah overlooking the property.
Minutes from European PGA Tour Santo da Serra Golf and from two horse riding centres as well as the famous levadas walks, Quinta das Colmeias is well located to explore Madeira whilst on holidays.
We had a group of 7 friends stay for 3 nights in this quiet country home tucked away in the mountains. It was a good spot for our large with beautiful landscape and great stargazing nights. Andrew communicated clearly the instructions for arriving to the house from the airport and we kept in touch as needed.
It was a bit cooler there than in the city center, so sadly we didn't get to use the pool but it was a nice relief in general from the hotter air in Funchal. The beds were comfortable and the rooms were spacious, I especially loved the sink in the room, which made it easy to freshen up while others used the bathrooms. The kitchen was also very big and we did a family-style meal one night. I would recommend having some additional prepping utensils (knives, boards, platters) as it was a bit limited to cook for a large group but we made due with what we found and shared a delicious meal.
Location wise, we were a few minutes from nearby stores for essentials and a 20-min hilly ride down to Funchal, which wasn't too bad. We did a few hikes in the area which were also very easy to get to from the house, so recommended as a good base for being away from the Funchal and exploring the east side of the island. Recommend this place if you have a large family/group and would like to explore Madeira for its beautiful landscapes and hikes.
My wife and I stayed for eleven nights at this lovely, old country house. The owner, Jeremy, kindly met us at the airport and led us to the property, a 10 to 15 minute journey.
It is a step back in time into large-rooms with comfortable furnishings. It was clean and well maintained internally although the exterior was in need of some TLC. The views of the surrounding countryside were excellent, although often shrouded in cloud; the property being around 600m above sea level. Because of this, temperatures were often some 8 degrees lower than those in Funchal and on one of the evenings we felt it necessary to light the log fire in living room. We had taken our own DVD's to watch in the evenings but they did not play well on the small, old TV.
Beds were very comfortable and the nights were incredibly silent and peaceful. We did not use the pool although the two young boys staying in the neighbouring cottage seemed to love it.
All in all, we found this location to be an excellent base from which to access most of the island. It was our fifth visit to Madeira but our first stay on this side of the island giving us a chance to explore areas we had not been previously. The scenery is much greener and far more lush than other areas we've stayed at.
There's ample space at the property for a large family and It is a great base for those wishing to sightsee and explore but perhaps not for sun-worshipers.
