Getting Around:
Location logistics: Within about a 5-minute drive, you can reach Mammoth Mountain Ski Area (skiing and mountain biking), Twin Lakes (scenic waterfront and boat rentals), and Tamarack Cross-Country Ski Center (groomed Nordic trails).
The property was nice and clean, room for skis/boards right by the front door, and kitchen was well stocked. Only thing was getting verified to get check in instructions was a bit confusing and timely. Good location to gondola
First of all we love the location. There were a few issues, but those got resolved quickly. We will definitely stay there again. The only thing that would have made the stay better is the jacuzzi working.
This host (Grand Welcome) was extremely difficult and I felt less than up front in their listing they REQUIRE submission of photo ID through a Biometric service provider (truvi - look it up if you want to see what they do) and when that service failed to "verify" a valid ID they messaged from a number from a San Antonio, TX area code REQUIRING that I text a photo of myself holding my ID and my credit card (think mugshot) to another number in Tennessee (also not in the listing). The listing only says "photo ID required", which is not an unreasonable requirement - failed systems and texting photos for facial recognition service providers is extremely unreasonable. Perhaps the worst part is that all of this is that they only disclose this after the cancellation window has closed and they would not allow cancellation - even after intervention by VRBO.Finally there was also an issue with parking passes which were not delivered until the morning after I arrived which required me to wait to leave until they were delivered to avoid risk of having my car towed. I am usually generous with ratings and my only previous stay with VRBO last month earned 5 stars across the board. I am disappointed that VRBO does not emphaisze host ratings on the front of the listing. I will never knowingly stay in a Grand Welcome property again.
In order to book the place I had to put a photo of my driver's license into Truvi, some kind of verification site. I have no idea how secure the site is and it's a lot of personal information. No option to skip it. That site didn't work at first. The initial photo of the place is not exactly how it looks now. It has a wood burning stove now, no fireplace, mantle and hearth; faux wood floor versus carpet. But this place has a rustic vibe we liked. It's a ski condo so all the woodwork is kind of beat up, to be expected, but they might consider fixing it. Kitchen was fine, had everything we needed, plus. Check-in was a bit frustrating. I had to email Grand Welcome 3 times, specifically asking for it, before they finally provided the access code for the door. I went back to review the emails from them before writing this, but they are wiped out -- gone. The place had some dirt, food (?) debris and trash on the sofa bed and floor when we removed the cushions and pulled out the sofa bed. It has a little balcony which is kind of nice. Walkable to the blues festival site, and it's an easy walk to The Village and transport stops.
This property is in an excellent location within short walking distance from the Mammoth Village and Gondola. The great location is the primary reason to book this unit. However, the unit/complex is several decades old and badly needs a refresh, particularly this unit's interior. A low-budget approach has been used in furnishing the unit and the while functional, the furniture and appliances are old. The heating system consists of electric room space heaters The one-bedroom space is small and filled with too much furniture. The queen bed barely fit in the bedroom.Management was very responsive to our questions. An updated check-in system with keycoded locks would be nice to eliminating trips to the management office to pick up keys. The rental fee for this unit is among the lowest in the area, and much lower than that of a comparable unit near the Village. The fee reflects the aged condition of the unit.
