Grandpa Mate House, authentic charming house from 1930.
Back in 1930, after leaving Dragove to work in New York , grandpa Mate built a beautiful house opposite the old one in harmony with nature surroundings. Almost 90 years later weâre following the very same path of grandpa Mate by retaining the authenticity of the house and combining it with modern retro comfort. Grandpa Mate House is based on Dugi Otok at the edge of the village Dragove. The house was completely restored by its it`s current Croatian and American owners in 2010. It has a fully equipped kitchen with a gas stove and refrigerator with mini freezer, wooden stairway, a large hallway and two sleeping rooms in the first floor and spacious bathroom and a hallway in the ground floor. CableTV. The sleeping rooms are equipped with queen size beds and high quality mattresses. All windows are protected with a built-in, solid and easy to use mosquito net. Running water in the home is used from the water tank, which is located under the ground, filled with rainwater. On the ground floor there is a living room with the kitchen, bathroom and a hall. On the first floor there are two bedrooms and a hall. The house is air-conditioned. A spacious stone courtyard is shared with Aunt Regina House dating from 1882. A stone barbecue in the shade of a sixty year old fig tree and an outdoor dining table make space for a comfortable dining. Two houses can accommodate 10 guests. There is a parking lot for four cars in the back yard
We were only able to stay for one night but found the house to be clean, comfortable and very well equipped with everything we could possibly need. The host was very accomodating. We only wish we were able to stay for longer!
Highly recommended, if you are looking for a comfortable vacation on an island off the tourist hype
Our family stayed at Dugi Otok in August and we had a great time at the house of our landlord Goranko. It is located in the village of Dragove high on the island. In the village, people have lived for a long time from agriculture. Because that was so hard, many emigrated in the past century, also Goranko's ancestors. Today Dragove is a tranquil village overlooking the Adriatic Sea with many cats, a tiny village shop. In the morning the baker with the delivery van looks over.
Goranko's houses are completely renovated. Everything is modern, tastefully decorated and comfortable, nothing is broken. There is air condition as in most houses. The kitchen is well equipped, the bathroom, laundry and towels were great. Cleaning staff shows up regularly, so everything is very clean. If you do not want to break the connection to the media world, Smart TV and cable TV are available. There is a freezer with fish from the fishing neighbor Anke at reasonable prices. You can prepare it in an extra grill house and enjoy it on the stone table in the yard.
Gorankos really stands out for his great care. Should something not work, he will take care of it personally. You can always call him if you have questions about staying on Dugi Otok. My conclusion: insider tip! Highly recommended, if you are looking for a vacation on a quiet island without tourist hype.
We arrived at Dugi otok to visit the â StraĆĄna peÄâ cave that is only a 20 minute drive away from our rental homes that we chose for their location, design and amenities. Since March is still cold at night we were very happy to find our home already warm so we had a quick recovery from the cold and rain that followed us. The next morning was even better since the view from our bedrooms and from the terrace at Regina House shows a spectacular view of the sunrise. The neighborhood is very quiet so we felt like we ere alone on the island, a true paradise.
Our hosts were very welcoming, besides the warm house we were greeted with coffee, mandarins, tea, water and a Wi-Fi connection that was surprisingly fast and covered both houses, the terrace and part of the garden so we could get in touch with our friends and family while enjoying the outside air. Our hosts were also very quick to respond to our needs, bringing us salt and sugar that we forgot.
The next day we found some locally made honey, olive oil and fresh fish that we prepared on our garden barbecue. We enjoyed a lovely dinner with perhaps a bit too much wine.
This was the the first time I came to Dugi otok this time of the year (late March). We have chosen two houses (Aunt Regina House and Grandpa Mate House) in Dragove as a starting point for a bicycle tour to the Veli Rat Lighthouse on Saturday and to Lake Mir and TelaĆĄÄica Bay on Sunday. The houses are situated at the top of the hill and offer a phenomenal view of the sea and the islands. The houses are obviously equipped for the use of the owners so that the entire equipment and all the furniture is far above the customary standard. Coffee, tea, water bottles and double towel sets were waiting for us, our host helped us to buy local lavender honey and allowed us to check-out at 5 pm! It was great!
