About the Area
Nestled just 4 miles inside the southern entrance of Yosemite National Park is the charming and historic town of Wawona. Located at the base of Chilnualna Falls (the second-highest vertical drop waterfall in Yosemite), and home to the principal trailheads into the southern Yosemite wilderness, Wawona is also the closest town to the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias. Wawona has the feel of a small town but is bustling with activity! Over 160 residents, including Yosemite Park employees, live in Wawona and can be seen gathering at the town's community center, playing a pickup game of basketball at the elementary school, jogging on one of the many picturesque trails, or simply walking their dogs and baby strollers through the winding residential streets. The historic Wawona Swinging Bridge boasts the best natural water slide in the Park! The historic village is filled with docents, stagecoach rides, horseback rides, and barn dances in the summer season, and the Wawona Meadow Loop offers year round riparian meadow wildlife viewing. Wawona was known to the local Native American Miwok in their language as Pallachun (a good place to stay). It is located entirely within Yosemite National Park (it preceded the founding of the park as a national recreation area) and is located on the South Fork of the wild and scenic Merced River, on the main highway (State Route 41) from Fresno to Yosemite Valley. Galen Clark, who helped gain preservation legislation for Mariposa Grove and what later became part of Yosemite National Park, occupied the Wawona area in 1855 and established a tourist rest and modest ranch, which he later sold and made into a hotel and resort property (the Wawona Hotel). The Wawona post office was established in 1878 and was originally called Clark's Station. The Redwoods in Yosemite has over 120 vacation rental homes and is proud to say that all of them are located in Wawona. All are within walking distance of everything that Wawona has to offer, and every one of them is surrounded by the majesty of Yosemite National Park!
Neat and cozy "little cabin in the woods" is a great and aptly named! It is exactly that. This cabin has everything you really need for a restful sleep after a day of exploring nearby Yosemite. The management office is located right around the corner for easy check-in and check-out processes. We appreciated the well-stocked kitchen for preparing simple meals. The Wifi connection was definitely appreciated and needed in this wooded area. We had a great time and hope to stay here again soon.
The cabin had everything needed for our stay. If you need an operational oven or heat above 63 degrees this is NOT the cabin for you. It does have wood burning fireplace which we enjoyed greatly but at night it gets cold.
As the description stated âlittleâ cabin in the woods is a small cabin that easily accommodates four people. The kitchen area is small but sufficient, the dining area and family room are nice and comfortable. The deck is spacious. Location is great and very convenient to Mariposa Grove in Yosemite. The only slightly negative thing is that the shower head is very low, you need to squat if youâre taller than 5 feet 2 inches to wash your hair, but we all managed, so itâs not a deal breaker. Overall it was a nice cabin in the woods.
Our stay was everything we dreamed of. My family came from San Diego and the East Coast, and we were all immediately in love with the Cabin, the location, and the beauty of the property, especially the little beach on the Merced. Thank you so much!!!! We cannot wait to come back.
Cottage sleeps four. Cozy and easily accessible from
Wawona entrance to Yosemite. Small grocery store part of the community but their offerings are minimal (only frozen meat while we were there). A long drive on windy roads to the Yosemite Valley, but very close to Sequoia Grove.
Cabin had everything we needed. Mind you it doesnât have air conditioning but we were never there during the day so it didnât bother us. Would gladly stay there again!
