Mt Ashland Homestead, Ashland 10m, 40 ridgetop acres old forest, right by PCT
Beautiful, large architectural home nestled in the Siskiyou/Cascade Mountain forests of Southern Oregon. About 15 minutes to downtown Ashland, 20 minutes to Mt. Ashland Ski Area and alpine hiking, and a three minute walk from the front door to the Pacific Crest Trail with meadows, forest and ridges looking out to many mountain ranges. This home is a peaceful, quiet, and beautiful getaway: close enough to Ashland to be convenient, yet surrounded by old forest and mountains and right on top of Siskiyou Summit. You'll the way the natural light floods the house with s feeling of being out in nature even when you're inside! Features fully equipped kitchen and dining (both formal and informal), two large, open living rooms, large sun room and two-person Ofuro hot tub overlooking the forest, 2-car garage, seasonal Swedish sauna house, and walking trails. For children, If you would like a full-size crib and high chair, please let us know. Kids call it 'the adventure house' and there is plenty of room to play indoors and out. Outdoor play structure, paved drive for bikes, lots of nature to explore.
Concerns: We don't have any bears or mountain lions in this neck of the woods, so an evening stroll to watch the sunset is quite safe. We are above the elevations where poison oak grows. No one has ever gotten a tick on them, not even ourselves when we are doing work on the land. If ever needed, it takes the ambulance 10 minutes to arrive at the house (really!). Families and couples often spend weeks here, working remotely and enjoying nature during all the seasons. Professional companies have also found it a beautiful place for a work retreat (usually renting the log house as well). We have excellent Starlink satellite internet (faster than in town) and cell phone reception is always very good. Callahan's Restaurant is a mile away, providing breakfast, lunch and dinner is you'd like easy access to a nearby dining. The town of Ashland is home to the renowned Shakespeare Festival. Smaller theater companies are also quite good. Being a thriving "tourist town," restaurants are outstanding, nearly mind-boggling in number and variety, making exploration fun. Children really enjoy the ScienceWorks Museum, Lithia Park and Wildlife Images. Children also enjoy riding their bikes (and little training bikes) on our long paved driveway, catching frogs by the pond, having 38 acres to explore safely. Sledding and building ice caves in the winter is fun! We recently built a big play structure with swings, slides, a little kitchen, climbing. Also in the Rogue Valley are many wineries and wine country tours. The Britt Festival, Rogue Valley Symphony, and smaller venues (such as a few of the wineries), provide a wide choice of music performances. Rafting companies offer their usual adventures (in season) on the Rogue River. Noah's River Adventures is conveniently based out of Ashland. Mountain bikers enjoy the trails that connect from the top of Mt Ashland down to the town (often using Ashland Mtn Adventures bike shuttle service). The surrounding mountains, lakes and rivers provide manifold opportunities for fishing, boating, swimming and exploring. Seven Pacific Crest trailheads literally surround us. One is a two minute hop, skip and jump from the house. The trailhead for Pilot Rock is a few minutes' drive. Thankfully, not that many people come up to walk or run. On the weekends there may be three cars parked at a trailhead and during the week almost no one. Mt Ashland's alpine forest road and PCT trailheads are accessible snow-free by foot and car from about May through mid-November. Many opportunities exist for winter sports. For alpine skiers and snowboarders, we have Mt Ashland Ski Area (20 minute drive) and Mt Shasta Ski Park (1.5 hour drive). For x-country skiers and snowshoeing, a multitude of choices which I'm happy to share with you (and the maps you might need). For back-country skiers the areas behind Mt Ashland offer endless ridges and bowls, Mt McLoughlin and Mt Shasta provide interesting terrain as well. And there's good old sledding with your kids from the house and also up on the mountain. We are lift/lodging partners with Mt Ashland Ski Area, so you can purchase lift vouchers from us while you are here.
During all the seasons, our homestead is a good place to find comfort, relaxation, great outdoor exercise and inspiration in the midst of beautiful old forests and meadows and mountains. Whether you are looking for a retreat or a time with family and friends, you can settle in and enjoy. And... kids can play freely and there's plenty of room to roam!
The space The homestead is located on the Siskiyou Summit just south of Ashland. The 38 acres of forest (unlogged) are the site of the historic old wagon (and early automobile) road, now our driveway, crossing the summit from Oregon to California. This has been our family home since 1982, and we've been caring for this peaceful land ever since. We are part of the bird flyway and our forest is home to thousands of birds. Twenty to thirty different bird species can be heard in one sitting on the deck or by the pond. We had a wonderful event last spring when two baby Great Gray owls hatched and the family is still here. Animals are primarily deer, squirrels and fox. On the property there are three houses (the Log House, the Forest House, and the Pond House), all far enough away from one another to be private and secluded. We live permanently on the property with our dog, Kellen, in the Pond House. We enjoy meeting people and will be available if you need anything during your stay. The Log House will also be rented at times, has a separate driveway and parking area with forest in between. The house has a key pad entrance so you can check in if we're not home when you arrive. The garage door also has a keypad. The central heating and air conditioning is adjustable to your comfort. Many guests like to enjoy a fire in the wood stove on cool evenings. All details for getting to the house, getting into the house, using the WiFi, house rules, and everything else will be available to you upon booking in a detailed itinerary section.
Guest access Guests will have access to the Forest House, the seasonal sauna, the gazebo, the pond, and the entire property. EV charger is available on request ($10 per charge).
Other things to note Our dog, a medium-sized McNab, is very friendly. If you feel uncomfortable around dogs, please let us know and we can adjust to you. Also, please note that the sauna is readily available during sauna season (October through mid-May). It is an additional $35 for a sauna. Let us know ahead of time and we will help you get it fired up.
The setting was beautiful and serene; the house well furnished and equipped with everything needed for an enjoyable and carefree stay and the host, Micheline, was attentive and gracious.
We had the absolute best time! The home was beautiful, clean, and had a cozy mountain ambiance with the surrounding forest. Check-out procedures were incredibly easy and didnât pressure guests to the degree of other stays Iâve had. We mainly explored the surrounding areas and went to a lot of parks and hiking trails, so we werenât in the home a lot but it provided a much needed rest and relaxation in the evening! The kitchen was well stocked with any and all cooking materials, the showers ran hot, and the beds were very comfortable. Due to the brevity of our trip, we wanted to maximize sightseeing so we unfortunately did not get to meet Micheline in person. Regardless, by far one of the most welcoming hosts! Kept in contact, gave recommendations when asked, and made sure we were comfortable and enjoying our time. I would give this stay double the maximum allowed score if possible! Thank you
The home is absolutely beautiful. Clean. Welcoming. Micheline is charming and very welcoming as is Keller her dog. Sauna was fabulous, living room cozy with a warming fire, kitchen well stocked. All in all absolutely terrific.
Mich was a wonderful hostess. She offered to help and made us feel right at home. The cabin was clean and comfortable. We had everything we needed. We had things planned for every day but we returned each evening to a comfortable welcoming place to stay. Thank you!
Everyone enjoyed the time we had at this property--very clean, all the amenities we needed, enjoyed its historical connection and associated family artifacts, the area felt very peaceful & relaxing, and saw a variety of wildlife around & near the property. We were there for my grandson's wedding in Talent, town north of Ashland, OR; and we appreciated the cooler temperature at the Homestead when we returned from the wedding, or after eating out in Ashland. A shout out to her son Nico who took the time to help my daughter & her boyfriend with the tools that enabled them to do the return drive home to Washington state after having problems with their car's catalytic converter. And lastly, but certainly not the least, a shout out to Micheline who was a the most wonderful, accommodating, and interesting hostess that we have met in our travels. We were also tickled to spend a little time with her dog, Kellan. Best wishes and thanks a bunch again, Micheline.
If you find yourself yearning for a mountain hideaway adventure. You cannot miss Michelineâs chalet on old 99 by the Pacific crest trail. This property and our trip was amazing. My family of 7 celebrated our fatherâs 80th birthday on the property. We created unforgettable culinary experiences thanks to how thoughtful the kitchen was designed. Went on short nature hikes to the pond and jaunts to the pacific crest trail. Loved that we were a quick 15-min drive from Ashland, enjoyed a Shakespeare play and many adventures in town but relished our return to the relaxing chalet in the evenings. Stop scrolling for other places, trust me there is something magical about this home.
Such a beautiful house on beautiful property. Everything is one-of-a-kind. We appreciated how the necessities were just there: coffee, shampoo/conditioner, paper towels, Kleenex, etc etc. You have all the privacy you'd like but also the host isn't far away. Gorgeous and perfect!
This place was perfect for the 8 of us. There are opportunities for hiking and we were close to Ashland to drive in for a play. The house was comfortable and clean with all the amenities we needed.
We chose this property because it was close to Ashland and OSF and to skiing at Mt. Ashland. The home is roomy and there is lots of land around it. The host lives close and there is another rental next door. A short walk to the PCT.
This beautiful home surpassed our highest expectations for a secluded, comfortable, charm-filled Christmas retreat that could sleep 7 adults and one 2 year-old comfortably. It was well-equipped, clean, private and perfectly situated for hiking, skiing or lounging at the top of Siskyou Pass. Our host Micheline was also just delightful. It was a wonderful place - by every measure - in which our family could Christmas together.
This is a beautiful "cabin" situated in a forest of ponderosa pine, Douglass fir, incense cedar and white fir. We were visiting the area to take advantage of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, to visit nearby parks (Crater Lake, Redwoods and Klamath Lake), and relax. Staying here was truly one of the high points of our most excellent visit. It is a lovely place to relax and enjoy myriad wildlife. We are avid birders and identified over 35 bird species on the property during our stay. The host was most gracious!
The house was well appointed. Great location if you enjoy the enjoys. Close to the PCT trail, Mt. Ashland, and short drive into downtown Ashland. Very peaceful and relaxing setting.
Beautiful, comfortable, well designed space in dazzling natural setting
Our host was so warm and lovely. She communicated clearly and was so generous showing us around her amazing mountaintop property just outside Ashland. It was a short walk to the Pacific Crest Trail from our front door! The space was super clean, well organized, and personal in the best way. If you are looking for something that is not generic and evokes a strong sense of place and history, that is highly functional, and every detail -- down to the beautiful hand drawn map of the property and all its features -- this is your place! We felt so restored on depature and hope to return some day!
I wanted to bring the kids to the Shakespeare Festival. To make it special, we stayed on Mt. Ashland at this lovely site. The home was beautiful, the area is lovely and we enjoyed our short stay immensely. We hope to return!
My family booked a girls trip to visit Ashland. We usually stay in town but decided to try something different. We are so glad we did. Such a beautiful getaway! Our host was over the top with hospitality. The house is a treasure trove of eclectic items and beautiful views we will be back!
Mich went above and beyond in accommodating our needs. We were a group of women friends having a nature retreat. She gave us a guided tour around her property and it was such a pleasure to be in such gorgeous nature and to be able to take walks on nearby trails, enjoy cooking in her well stocked kitchen, listen to music on the sound system and enjoy the beautiful storied furnishings in her home. I will definitely be back the next time Iâm in Ashland!
We enjoy quiet and nature, and this place was centered on both. This is a unique and special home where you can get away from it all. You can hike and explore out the door, and then you can drive up to Ashland and get some culture.
We all loved our stay, the property had a lot to offer and lots of extra touches, such as interesting art and our own decorated Christmas tree. Mich the owner was very hospitable and kind. The house was clean and comfortable. The beds were good, we had a very nice stay.
A great place to getaway. Micheline is awesome. The sauna is amazing and the house is beautiful and comfortable. A perfect time in nature with friends!
My sister, mother and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Mich was the quintessential host, from an in-person welcome and tour, to addressing a technical problem in real time, to a lovely send-off on our way out.
The location's proximity to our activities in Ashland, and nature all around us really made it feel like a getaway, and like we had a forest all to ourselves.
Accommodations were comfortable and provided everything we needed. Highly recommend!
My wife and I had a relaxing stay at Micheline's house near Mt Ashland. The house was very clean and comfortable. The location was great for hiking on the PCT and close enough to Ashland to pop in for dinner. We enjoyed afternoons in the sun room and took advantage of the well-appointed kitchen and gas bbq for a few dinners. Micheline was great to work with and she provided a number of good recommendations for our hikes and winery visits. A very enjoyable stay.
