Quay Cottage
Stroll along the quay in the ever popular village of Dittisham and you’ll come across Quay Cottage - the blue one! This double fronted, super quaint cottage sits in the most stunning location imaginable: Right on the estuary with uninterrupted views across the River Dart to Greenway and beyond. This gem of a cottage is your perfect escape to kick back, unwind and take your foot off the gas.
The Quay in Dittisham has it’s own unique vibe and is a favourite jaunt for boaters, paddle boarders and crab catchers of all ages. Take your morning cuppa out to the front to sit and watch the comings and goings around the pontoon. You’re also just 50 steps from the Ferry Boat Inn and highly acclaimed Anchorstone cafe.
Inside, the cottage boasts characterful exposed beams, a cozy wood burner and can sleep up to eight guests. With two double bedrooms, a three-bed bunk room, and a separate single bedroom with a pull out trundle, there's room for the whole squad. And let's not forget the outdoor entertainment space on the decking, complete with panoramic views of the estuary. Stylishly renovated with nautical touches abound, you’ll soon settle in to the unhurried pace of life.
Where You’ll be Staying
The cottage is accessed from the quayside - via a covered porch which leads directly into the sitting room.
This cosy living area has low ceilings, original supporting beams and delightful views and a wood burner. There is a step up to the dining area, off which, there is a Kids Den complete with single bed (with pull out) for 2 guests and Xbox.
Two further steps lead up into the kitchen from the dining area which is well equipped with a door leading out to the rear space. Here there is additional seating and further river views over the cottage can be found from the elevated decking area.
The en suite master bedroom with king-size bed, is situated at the rear of the property. The en-suite has shower cubicle, wash basin, WC and bidet.
Bedroom two has superb river views and a double bed.
Bedroom three again has superb river views and is furnished with fixed triple bunk beds (the top bunk is 7’ from the floor and is not suitable for young children) but there is space for a travel cot or low level occasional bed.
There is also a family bathroom fitted with a panelled bath with hand-held shower attachment, WC, and a wash hand basin.
The Area:
Just a few things to whet your appetite...
The naval town of Dartmouth is just a 15-minute drive (20-30-minute river cruise) away, with its award-winning restaurants, boutique shops and delightful waterfront. If you need a touch of civilisation, the Flavel Centre is just the ticket. With an exciting year round programme of live performance, film and art, its the perfect place to soak up a little culture.
Walkers can access the South West Coast path in Dartmouth and enjoy some of the most scenic (and arduous) sections of the whole route. Either take the lower ferry to Kingswear and trek around the headland towards Brixham or head to Dartmouth Castle and discover hidden coves as you make your way round to Little Dartmouth.
Ding the bell outside the Ferry Boat Inn to summon the foot ferry (yes really!) and take a trip over to the National Trust’s Greenway House - Agatha Christie’s former home. Within a short drive you’ll also find the beautiful, atmospheric Compton Castle and the D'Oyly Carte family’s Coleton Fishacre with its 30 acre gardens and breathtaking sea views.
Slapton Ley Nature Reserve is South West England’s largest fresh water lake. Separated from the sea by the narrow shingle bar, Slapton Ley is every nature lover’s dream. The Ley is teeming with a huge variety of fauna and flora; it’s easy to spend a day uncovering all it offers.
Take the ferry to Brixham and the wider Torbay area. Paignton Zoo is just a short journey away and boasts over 3000 breathtaking species of animals in five realistic habitats.
Further up river, discover the bohemian town of Totnes, with a vast array of independent shops and cafes. Why not step back in time with a trip on the Dartmouth Steam Railway up to Totnes and combine your journey with a boat trip along the River Dart for the return leg.
For kids of all ages, Woodlands Theme Park is just a few minutes drive away, offering outdoor adventure, falconry, a wildlife sanctuary and indoor play areas. A fun day out for the whole family whatever the weather.
Near to Woodlands is also Dartmouth Golf and Country Club: a luxury spa and country club boasting an 18 hole championship golf course as well as a 9 hole course to challenge any golfer.
Further afield the Devon cities of Plymouth and Exeter both of which invite you to make the most of your Westcountry break taking in our local hospitality. There's something for the whole family in Plymouth with its National Marine Aquarium and enormous Pavillions Leisure Centre with its year round ice rink and swimming pool. Similarly, Exeter has a stunning cathedral and beautiful open spaces to enjoy year round. Get lost in its winding city centre streets or visit the new Princesshay shopping centre to make the most of its large chain stores and stylish boutiques.
South Devon is a food lovers’ heaven; bursting with fresh fish and delicious home grown produce at every turn. As well as award winning restaurants and seaside classics there are many fresh farmers' markets offering all kinds of gastronomic delights to tickle your tastebuds. Dartmouth Farmers' Market runs on the second Saturday of every month and the annual food festival is not to be missed. Visit the Sharpham vineyard to sample their great local wine and cheese, and walk amongst the vines nestling on the slopes of the River Dart.
So, if you’re looking for somewhere to kick off the shoes, get some sand between your toes and fresh sea air in your lungs - this is the place for you.
Guest access:
All of the cottage and rear garden space excluding the raised decking area and outdoor lock off.
Other things to note:
The cottage is most suited to families and couples who want to enjoy the unique vibe of Dittisham and the beautiful riverside location in the knowledge that they are only minutes from Dartmouth itself and the beautiful South Hams area.
We ask that all guests are respectful of their surroundings and our neighbours.
Quay Cottage is located located very close to open water.
The property has steps inside - both leading up from the living room to the dining room and also from here into the kitchen. Whilst there is a single bedroom downstairs, this involves a couple of steps to access. The main stairs in the cottage have open treads with horizontal bar across to prevent a small child sliding through.
There is no parking space at Quay Cottage. When tides permit, guests can drive down and park on the foreshore in front of the cottage, but will likely need to move vehicles approaching high tide. Dittisham has two public pay and display car parks - both of which are close by and allow overnight parking. Day and week tickets are available.
