The first room we were in had non functioning lamps and a non functioning TV. The room ( like all others in the hotel) had no telephone so solving this problem required trips to reception. The receptionist had to come me to the room to inspect the problem as, at 4 or 5 in the afternoon, there was apparently no other staff member in whole hotel.
We were offered a room change and accepted it.
I asked about cancelling the next two nights based on this experience and whether we would get a refund for them ( we had paid for the room in advance). The receptionist could not answer this question but told me a manger would call me later. He did so but he couldn't answer the refund question either. I asked as told another manager would call me the next day but I received no call.
I just felt worn down and pessimistic that any action would occur. This room was approximately AUD 500 per night. We were given a EUR 10 voucher
The hotel's unstated policy is clear: 1. get the customers money and keep it while elevating the problem till the customer is worn out. 2. Maximise profit by having a receptionist run the the hotel after about 4pm
