Marketed differently, the Sandcastle could be a tourism attraction on it's own right - an architectural passion project of an eccentric millionaire.
Let me just say that the photos - which are great - simply don't do the actual property justice. This is a place you need to actually see to believe.
For starters, they don't begin to capture the scale of the building and the grounds. It's huge. We were at guest capacity and never felt crowded. Between gazebos, nooks and patios there were plenty of places to get away. The grounds themselves were huge and wonderfully maintained.
Secondly, the photos don't give a sense of the functionality. For a unique property like this, form can often come at the expense of usability, but here everything from the kitchen to the stairs and pool deck just made sense.
Third, the staff and crew were great. We were welcomed with a bottle of tequila (a great surprise after a long day of travel), and our property manager. At all times there was on-site security at the gatehouse and walking the grounds. Maintenance and hospitality were also present at various times to turn things over and make sure everything was working. Even with them there, we always felt private.
Overall, a great experience. Everyone felt very safe and really loved the Sandcastle. Wonderful memories. If there was one nitpick, the cost difference for additional guests is pretty high - the difference between, say 14 guests and 16 or 18 shouldn't add as much as it does.
IF YOU VALUE YOUR LIFE OR THE LIVES OF YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS WHO ARE STAYING WITH YOU DO NOT RENT THIS HOUSE!
We were on a family vacation and woke up to a robber in our bedroom at 2:00 am. I chased him out but found out that he had been in all six bedrooms and stole the cash from each bedroom. In addition, he stole an I-pad.
The issues are:
1. The house is very remote with only one other residence being occupied within 1 kilometer.
2. The storm last year took out the side wall and the back wall. They were around 10 feet in height and prevented access to the property.
3. The owner replaced them with minimal walls that provide absolutely no security. Anyone can walk onto the property at any time, even stray dogs. There was no thought given to the safety of the guests.
4. Recently there have been robberies at the closed Surfs Up Restaurant and homes further down the beach.
Note: The pictures on the VRBO website are old and do not show the actual situation. In addition, the pictures show a covered bar area that we were looking forward to but is no longer there. I recommend that VRBO updates their website to reflect the reality of the area around the pool.
Until the owner resolves the security issue, I do not recommend that anyone stays here.
Day after day, this property grew on us. Apparently, there was a huge storm surge 4 months ago that wiped out some of the rear of the facility. So, no fence along the back, some stairs to beach, but not all the way, and no bar area by pool. Nonetheless, we had a fabulous time. Lots of stairs, but that provides many levels and privacy if you wish. We did rent cars which allowed for adventures. But we ended up spending the last 4 mornings at Las Brujas beach (5 min away by car). With 5 children under 5 and 5 adults, we could not have found a more perfect beach. Small waves for kid on shoreline plus big ones for boogie boarding farther out. Lunch, naps (adults played mini golf on rather beaten up course, but still fun) and pool at the house in the afternoon. Pool was perfect temperature and hot tub attached provided a warm area for those preferring it. All of the kids loved both and we spent a few hours in the water until sunsetâŠspectacular every night!
We did play on the tennis court which is in good condition, but would be nice if 4 decent rackets and some balls were provided (or say to bring balls).
Only thing that would be better is a way to fit 10 people around one table to eat. This may not matter depending on the configuration of your group.
We informed Rafael, house manager, of small things that were bothersome and he was accommodating.
All in all, we loved this property and had a wonderful and fun time.
Yâall we just got back from staying at this BEAUTIFUL home and the pictures donât do it justice! We absolutely LOVED it there and the staff Cindy and Rafael made our stay even more amazing!! It was a total of 17 of us 5 children and 11 adults from ages 3-70 and there was plenty of room for everyone! We will definitely love to stay there again if we ever go back!
From the moment we booked the Sandcastle (a year prior to our travel!) we were excited to spend the holidays with our kids/grandkids at this beautiful house on the beach. We were not disappointed! There were 13 of us in our party, 8 adults/5 children. With four stories and 6 bedrooms we had plenty of space to spread out. Common areas were spacious enough to be together. We spent most of our time at the pool area and the beach which was literally at our "back door"! Amazing! We spent so much time by the pool we almost forgot to explore the grounds. Everyday there was something new to explore.
The onsite housekeeper & houseman made our stay extra enjoyable. They definitely went above and beyond in making our stay comfortable, enjoyable but most of all memorable! Thanks so much to Cindy and Rafael for taking such good care of us during our stay. We already miss sleeping to the sounds of the ocean and morning coffee on the rooftop.
We are ALL looking forward to coming back to the Sandcastle!
We recently got back after a weeks stay at the Sandcastle. I can't exclaim enough about how much fun and relaxing our stay was. First and foremost, Rafael and Cindy went above and beyond to make sure our stay was as comfortable as possible. Very polite and charming. Rafael was very helpful with advice on all the ins and outs of Mazatlan. For those concerned about staying outside the golden zone, fear not! After taking a day trip to the golden zone and their beaches it was plain to see how good of a choice we made! The property was nothing short of stunning in every aspect. We are definately planning on making this a yearly adventure!
16 family members stayed at the Sandcastle in November 2019. This villa is amazing and the pictures do not do it justice. The grounds are huge and meticulously cared for. The house is spacious , especially most of the bedrooms. Two of the rooms are perfect for parents with children.. the pool, hot tub and bar area is large with plenty of lounge chairs. The beach is very private, you will have it mostly to yourself . The 6 year olds loved boogie boarding with adult supervision you may get lucky with having the oyster divers right out front, buy some! Rafael and Cindy are gems. Rafael will do anything for you: bartend, cook, shop, arrange taxis etc. Overall it was 5 star and we would definitely come back.
A few things they don't say in the "brochure". The house is located on a very bumpy unpaved road. Taxi drivers don't really like to go there. We were told that the government won't pave it because they don't want people to travel down it because there is a treatment center for drug/alcoholics at the end of it. The pool heater and hot tub have not worked in over two months. The gas grill is now briquets which they did not provide. The main kitchen advertised as "Gourmet" was very small, dishwasher & oven did not work. Knives looked like they had been used to chop firewood and we found the wooden spoons and plastic spatulas covered in mold. The gas was turned off in the second kitchen. You would think with the big gate and tall fences that one might feel safe and secure there but we quickly found out about "Mexican Security". The gate to the beach has a lock on it that is only there for show. Anyone can open it with a quick shove. Apparently, POWER outages are frequent in Mexico. We had at least 4 outages in 6 days. This is not a fun place to be at night with the power out. Do yourself a favor if you want a relaxing, stress-free vacation, stay in a hotel or timeshare. The staff, Rafael and Cindy, did there best to help us but they are employees of the owner, not the management company.
We were lucky enough to stay at the Sandcastle for 2 full weeks in February.
We had a total of 10 people (6 Adults - Ages 36-70 and 4 kids ages 4-11).
Everyone with us had an amazing time! The grounds are beautiful (The pictures don't do it justice) and the staff was fantastic. Every need we had was met immediately and the property exceeded every expectation we had. The house is a playground for both kids and adults. There is so much detail and thought put into every aspect of it....every day we found something new! There is so much room that if you needed some privacy, you had so many different patios or parts of the garden to choose from.
The beach was so quiet that we only saw maybe 2-3 people a day going for a walk. We hardly ever had to leave the house as we had everything we needed right there. The kids had a blast putting on shows for us on the stage in the garden too! All in all, this place is amazing and we would be back in a heart beat!
Thank you Sylvia, Pieter, Raphael and Cindy for such a memorable vacation.
We have traveled a lot to various locations, and this was one of the best vacations ever. Sylvia, Raphael, and Cindy did everything to make sure we were happy and comfortable. They were able to make recommendations for us regarding restaurants, best shopping places, etc. that were very helpful. They went out of their way to make sure everything was to our liking. Believe me, you won't be disappointed if you select the Sandcastle. There were ten in our group and we all had our own privacy, and yet the place was large enough to accommodate all of us as a group comfortably. We are already planning to go back. Great vacation!
My husband & I took our adult children to the Sandcastle for our anniversary, and couldnât have planned a more perfect holiday! There were 10 of us in total. This place is stunning and so much room to gather or head off to a favorite peaceful corner by yourself. We were greeted by Silvia and Rafael with fresh made ceviche, guacamole, salsa, margaritas and beer. The personalized service from Rafael and Cindy were second to none and any tours or transportation were easily arranged. We headed to town a couple of times, though everything we needed was there. The beach is beautiful and quiet, though a TV show was being filmed next door. Surfs Up Cafe is right next door and definitely one of the best restaurants for breakfast or lunch, complete with live music. The worst part was when we had to leave, but we have many great memories for sure! Thank you Silvia, Rafael and Cindy for a fantastic vacation!! During the 5-6 months prior to our trip we had a few questions about the resort, groceries, transportation etc. Pieter was able to get back to us promptly and we even had a few phone conversations along the way to make us feel at ease booking this property with them. Excellent experience overall and would love to go back again.

This place is so unique and the staff couldn't have been better. My family and friends had the best time ever. So secluded without the vendors bothering you on the beach. Great and friendly restaurant one house over with fantastic food and service. Rafael and Cindy were fantastic and attended to our every needs. Thank you so much, we will return!
Let me start by saying we had REALLY high expectations and those expectations were blown out of the water!! This place is awesome! We were in Mazatlan for a week and only left Sandcastle for one day trip. We had the pleasure of getting to know Sylvia, the owner, who was there during our stay. Wow is she ever great! SOOO helpful and nice. Not intrusive in ANY way. She had Rafael and Cindy (our daily caretakers, for lack of a better word) prepare fresh guacamole and margaritas for our arrival. They were both out of this world! Rafael and Cindy also make a killer pina colada, ceviche and carne asada tacos. Plus we had FRESH coconuts right off the tree! As soon as Sylvia found out we loved coconuts she sent her gardener up the tree to get us some. WOW! Also, Rafael negotiated the price for some oysters that the fishermen were out getting right off the beach. It doesn't get fresher or better than that! And they shucked them for us!
The beds were outstandingly comfortable - and trust me, one of our party is very particular about his bed! The kitchen had anything you could possible want - and I cook. We played tennis, basketball and even did a little putting. But, probably the most fun was playing volleyball in the pool. That got pretty competitive! Every night at dusk we'd go to the 4th floor and watch the sunset...ahhhhh. My daughter and I saw the green flash!! These were some of the most amazing sunsets I've ever seen and I live in CA. We thought we'd go do the nightlife thing at some point but we were so happy and exhausted by the end of the day we never made it. Now, mind you it was Me and my hubby - early 50's, our kids and their significant others - early 20's - and they didn't even want to go out. That to me speaks volumes of the serenity of Sandcastle Mazatlan!
The grounds are UNBELIEVABLE! Absolutely gorgeous! Impeccably manicured. If you needed to have solitude there were more than enough beautifully secluded areas on the grounds. You can even go for a search for the turtles that are on the property. Seriously, I can't say enough about this place! You really have to see it for yourself.
We will definitely be back!
Tracy, Dennis, Ali, Richard, Lucas & Zoe
P.S. Thanks again for EVERYTHING Sylvia!!
If you want privacy at the beach and pool - this is the place
Our family of 7 joined by three spouses and one grandchild (11 total) enjoyed an incredible week over the fourth of July at the Sandcastle. The single best feature was the privacy the property offered. We literally saw maybe 6 people on the beach over the course of the week. With our own pool and only seconds away from beach access it made it super convenient for everyone to hang out at the pool, pop down to the beach to ride the waves, and back up in time for a fresh batch of Pina Colatas.
The 5 bedrooms allowed everyone to have their own room and the common areas were cozy that made for a fun time together. Would we go back, absolutely. Rafael made us feel at home, took care of any need that we had, and could find us anything we wanted. Daily cleaning made keeping the house in order a breeze.
We did much of the cooking ourselves with several runs to SAMS, Walmart but also enjoyed bringing chefs in to do a few of the dinners. Rafael again was able to assist us in this. The property is not new but maintained. The size of the property allowed everyone to spread out so never felt like we were on top of each other.
Excursions were easily accessible from the property. It was an easy ride from airport - we moved 11 people around without our own transportation and did quite nicely (Rafael makes things happen). It was a great family vacation. We felt safe and had the time of our life.

Beautiful property
We had an amazing stay at this beautiful property. We can't wait to come back again.
