La Bergerie, tranquil retreat with pool in its own valley 30 miles from the sea

La Bergerie at Can Llouquette is a recently renovated holiday apartment, ideally suited for up to four people, though one additional baby can also be accommodated. It is private, has it’s own entrance, a well-equipped kitchen, living room, one double bedroom with ensuite, and a twin bedroom with ensuite. It also has it’s own terrace with BBQ and garden furniture. This terrace overlooks the stream.

Can Llouquette itself is an old apple farmstead with several buildings set in 20 acres. It has a large child-friendly pool set in a mature garden with lawn surrounded by forest and hills. We have a vegetable garden, meadows and about 1km of stream which has a plunge pool, picnic tables, BBQ, swings (and in high summer hammocks).

What makes Can Llouquette extra special is that it is set in its very own little valley. It is extremely private with no neighbours. We are surrounded by nature and there is no light pollution so the night sky is a delight. At night all you are likely to hear is the stream, the fountain, owls, boar and the occasional bark of roe deer. We have our own animals including chickens. Gorgeous mountain walks are possible from the house and within a short driving distance.

This is real unadulterated nature. It is stunningly beautiful and peaceful and at times capricious and unpredictable it is nature as few city people encounter in modern life. For us it is intoxicating. We have had to learn to become totally self-reliant. If you are the kind of person that thrives on busy towns and constant connectivity it is most likely not for you: we have no TVs, mobile reception is poor in the mountains, we do have Wifi (but we cannot always guarantee that because of storms). But instead of this you get the sound of the river, glorious sunshine, occasional wild summer storms, balmy evenings and lots and lots of peace.

It is this that makes it the perfect peaceful rural location to escape modern life, because you are truly enveloped in nature. The perfect place to detox and completely disengage from the pressures of the daily grind.

And yet, amidst all of this peace, our small village with bakery, cafe and restaurant is only 5 minutes away. And the sleepy medieval villages and market towns of Serralongue, Prats-de-Mollo and Amélie-les-Bains as well as Céret (and Camprodon in Spain) are all within easy driving distance. Wonderful seaside towns like Collioure on the Mediterranean and the beaches and bays of the Côte Vermeille are only an hour away.

This is the Eastern Pyrenees, the most southerly valley in France. It is an area of outstanding natural beauty only thirty miles from the Mediterranean at the start of the Pyrenean mountain range. We are only 25 minutes from Spain and can be reached from Girona or Barcelona, as well as Perpignan airports. In fact there are six airports that service this area. We are happy to give advice on travel.

We have four restored private and secluded holiday cottages for rental:

- La Bergerie (for four people)
- Le Pommier (for two people)
- El Casot (for two people) and
- L'Atelier (for four to six people)

Each accommodation is secluded and private so you can choose how much or how little you wish to interact with ourselves and the other guests.

We have restored the property and land over the 15 years we have lived here. We love all the area has to offer and can give plenty of advice to help you get the best out of your holiday: be that markets, things to do with children, walks, the best restaurants etc.

We speak English, French, German and Spanish and are happy to help in anyway we can.

Wonderful property, location and hosts

We really enjoyed our time in La Bergerie. Simon and Ashley where very welcoming and helpful hosts, the gite was lovely and the setting is wonderfully quiet and beautiful. It served as a great base to explore the local area such as going for walks visiting local places of interest and just enjoying french and catalan life and countryside. We enjoyed it so much we are currently back in the area for a number of months.

Amazing holiday

Absolutely brilliant holiday, enjoyed every second. Simon is an amazing, knowledgeable host, nothing seemed to much trouble and he made us feel very welcome. The property is beautifully clean with everything you could need. The pool is perfect with a shallow end and wide steps to get in and play on with kids. Seriously book this place, you will not regret it, cannot fault it. Can't wait to go back.

Beautiful!

We stayed in ‘La Bergerie’ for a week and honestly could have stayed much much longer. The mountain setting is absolutely beautiful and an idyllic getaway from the hustle and bustle of life. The accommodation had everything we needed, and it was a perfect location for us and our 2year old. Simon was the perfect host and couldn’t do enough for us. We will definitely return!

“We had found this spot in Alastair Sawday’s, have never been disappointed with anything we've booked this way and we weren't disappointed at Can Llouquette. We were made very welcome and the holiday got better still. The accommodation, pool, weather were excellent. Simon and Ashley were wonderful hosts throughout, always in the background if needed. The local village was a 30 minute walk but was worth the fresh bread, coffee, croissants and a view of French life...”

Fabulous stay & hospitality!

If you're looking for the perfect combination of peace, tranquility, and natural beauty - Can Llouquette is your place. Settled in a gorgeous valley, we were able to fully relax and enjoy quality time. The property itself is stunning, with tons of space & beautiful scenery. We could not have asked for better weather, and so the pool was put to good use! Simon was a wonderful and attentive host - his insight into the region was greatly appreciated! Thanks so much, - Tom (4th June to 11th June 2016)

Stunning piece of paradise

This is not a place to stay if you like noise and the hustle and bustle of city life. It is an absolutely beautiful setting in a dip towards the very top of the hills. The house is perfect and there are so many hidden gems in the gardens. Simon delivered fresh eggs to us in the morning and always discreetly in his own part of the house. What a stunning setting for a swimming pool

Can Llouquette is just a perfect holiday place

Can Llouquette is just a perfect place in the Pyrenees (near Mount Canigou, so close to the French-Spanish border). Really quiet and very private, child friendly (superb swimming pool, a nice stream downhill with hammocks, a football area,…) and green, well equipped gites (good beds, private terrace) and, last but not least, the hospitality of Simon and Ashley is wonderful (very friendly and lots of good hints). Can Llouquette is a little paradise (hmm, in fact not so little). We will definitely come back! All the best, Thomas and Soetkin (and the kids)

A wee Gem in the Pyrenees

My family had a lovely, relaxing week at Can Llouquette : it is a great place to unwind. It is in a valley surrounded by forests and mountains, and is very peaceful - the birdsong all around is a highlight. The fact that it is up in the mountains means that you get warm days - and cool nights, so you can sleep comfortably. There were nice walks to explore around the property and many wonderful places to visit within a short car ride. Simon and Ashley are attentive and helpful as hosts. Well worth a visit. We will return !!

Beautiful setting for a perfect family holiday

The gite was lovely, and ideal for our family, with everything we needed provided. The boys (and the adults) were delighted. The pool, stream, woods and play area meant that there was plenty for the children to do there, and if we wanted to venture further afield there was lots of interest within reasonable driving distance. The welcome was warm, and Simon, Ashley (and Sofia!) were very helpful. The setting really could not have been better, it was a wonderful peaceful yet fun place to be. Both boys have asked when we are going back, and I have already recommended it to both friends and family.

Simply wonderful

A real gem, where you feel at home from the moment you arrive. If you remember to shop on your way up you have everything you need; peace and quiet (except from the relaxing noise from the stream), beautiful nature, hammocks along the stream, playground for the kids, wonderful pool, well-equipped "apartments" and tasteful decor in- and outside. And animails, which especially our kids appreciate. Once you get used to driving in the mountains the distances don't seem that far and there are plenty of child friendly things to do within 40 minutes drive.

Wonderful peaceful holiday

Can Llouquette was all we needed for our summer holiday. The gite was clean, bright and well laid out. The farm is wonderfully quiet, with plenty of space for the children to run about in. The pool was well situated, with a good range of seats and recliners. We had a private terrace which allowed grown ups to read in peace whilst the children explored. The children loved not only the pool, but also exploring, playing in the stream and attempting to stay on the hammocks - I think they mastered it by the end of the week. We were made very welcome by Simon and his family and had a wonderful holiday.

Wonderful location and beautiful house

We stayed at Can Llouquette with our three children for two weeks and had the most perfect holiday. The setting in the Pyrenean mountains is beautiful and the house, garden, terrace and pool were of an incredibly high standard. Additionally, everything is done in the most environmentally friendly manner possible (including the sparklingly clean pool). Ashley and Simon and their daughter were warm and welcoming and made us feel cared for and relaxed. We would love to come back and would not hesitate to recommend Can Llouquette to anyone. There are plenty of things to see and do in the area, and being relatively close to both the sea and the mountains is perfect for a family.

lovely place surrounded by nature

We stayed from September 23rd 'til 30th with our newborn baby and our dog. Those were our first holidays since our daughter was born and we can not imagine a better place to spend them. There are lots of activities nearby, trails, places to visit and local food products to enjoy. Our dog met Blue, Simon's dog, a never-ending source of joy and energy to play with. During our walks around the house, we were able to discover some of the local fauna and flora, enjoy a meal in a grass field or close to the river, read a book or just having a nap without being disturbed by any noise. Simon, our host, made us feel definitely welcome; everything was arranged to make us feel like home.

Perfect week away from it all in the Pyrenees

We had a wonderful week with our young family in La Bergerie, so much so that none of us wanted to leave. Can Lloquette is a haven of tranquillity and just the place to unwind from the hectic pace of life. The view out over the canopy accompanied by the sound of the brook and the birds was idyllic. Beautifully converted and furnished in an understated and tasteful way the site includes hammocks near the stream, a place to barbecue for an early evening dinner ‘en plein air’ and a gorgeous child-friendly pool, offering all the ingredients for a perfect family retreat. A cheeky chicken with a penchant for escape provided our son with much amusement and Ashley, Simon and Sophia were consummate hosts. It came as no surprise that some of our fellow guests came to stay every year and it gets an unreserved recommendation from us.

A wonderful escape from everyday life

We had a wonderful stay at Can Llouquette as part of our tour of Europe this summer. This was our first time to the Pyrénées and it surpassed even our high expectations. The location is perfect, just an hour from the beach and nestled in the mountains with hikes and rides on the doorstep. The location for foodies is also great, given its position to the Spanish border. The house itself is a great achievement by Simon the owner, with a stunning outside area with grass lawn for the kids to meet up and play. The stream runs just down past the house which is a lovely spot to visit on hot days, I will miss the soundtrack of that stream sending me to sleep each night! Finally our hosts while Simon was away, Emilie and Stéphane, were so welcoming and hospitable. They were always happy to help and solved a number of unexpected challenges where they truly went above and beyond, thank you again! Their knowledge of the area is very valuable, pointing us to the best places to visit, eat, hike and bike etc. Here’s to another visit in the future! Chris

An idillic get away

Well we were looking for something out of the way, quiet, relaxing and scenic. Can Llouquette certainly didn't disappoint. We stayed in the main house which is very large with 3 bedrooms a large sitting are with big open fireplace (where we spent many night recovering from a good home cooked meal sipping banyules (well when in Rome!)) a large kitchen with dinning area with everything you need to cook for a large collection of people. It was clean and tidy and exactly as described. Its rustic so if you are looking for modern minimalism this is not the place for you. But if you want a characterful old farm house then you will love this. The location was perfect for us, but you need a car to get there and get around. But that is exactly the sort of holiday we were after. Can llouquette is a perfect location to go explore this beautiful part of France and only a short drive from Spain and Andorra. Simon (the owner) was the perfect host and we ended up sharing many an evening meal with him sitting on the veranda watching the sun go down. We loved it so much we came back again. I can;t recommend it more. Just don't go when I want to :-)

La Bergerie

We enjoyed a thoroughly relaxing two weeks at La Bergerie with our three-year-old daughter in early June 2010. The gite was bright and airy and exceptionally clean and comfortable. The linen was crisp and white, the furnishings simple and attractive. The kitchen had everything we required for preparing light meals and the open plan design provided plenty of room in which to eat and relax when the weather was inclement. There is a secluded terrace with table, chairs and umbrella where we could enjoy breakfast, or we would wander into the beautiful garden for five minutes with a book or a snooze in a deck chair. The property snuggles into the magnificent green mountain side and we spent many hours exploring the woods, enjoying the wildlife, listening to birdsong and the rushing river below, and taking in the unique atmosphere. The property feels very safe for children (the pool is attractively fenced), and our London-raised daughter loved the freedom of running around, collecting flowers and grasses, discovering the giant moths which visit once a year, and admiring the huge black and yellow salamanders that crept out of the undergrowth following a heavy rainfall. Simon, Ashley and Sophia, who live in the main farmhouse, are charming hosts - discrete, yet very generous with their time, providing advice and information when required. We would recommend the location unhesitatingly and hope one day to return.

You will long be glad you stayed!

Making a decision to visit place rather off the beaten path, you take a chance. When you make a decision to stay at Can Llouquette you have made the right decision. From the first inquiry to that moment of waving goodbye you will know just how right it was. Upon arrival, you are greeted by warmth and welcome. Your new home for the week (ours was the La Bergerie) feels just like home, stocked kitchen, comfy beds, exquisite views. Take advantage of a prepared meal for your first night. Ashley is a fantastic cook and seems to intuitively know just exactly what will satisfy a hungry belly and warm a soul. Explore Can Llouquette, soak up the beauty of the views. Be still and absorb some peace or hike through gorgeous surroundings. Jump in the car and go and explore the towns nearby. The choices are about endless and not a bad one to be made. Simon and Ashley are veritable fonts of information and Sofia is an endless source of joy. All three, and Chris too, if you are lucky enough to be there when she is, are reminders of what happens when you combine love, joie de vivre, humor and caring. You create an atmosphere for healing, for feeling good, for spending the best week (or 4) you may well spend, ever. You will know, yes, you did make the right decision, one you will long be glad you made.

A place to recover

Dear Ashley, Simon and Sophia, we – Stefan and I – just want to thank you for 14 wonderful vacation days, entrusted in your care. We definitely enjoyed our stay in your holiday house. Firstly, because we really love the nature and the silence outside the city. Secondly, we felt really comfortable in your apartment, which you have arranged and furnished with so much love, fancy and perfection. A blazing fire in the fireplace and a good Frensh wine have made our day complete. Thanks to all the windows we felt as if we were in the midst of nature. It was amazing to sit outside in the morning – to drink our first coffee and listen to the birds and the stream and to be caressed by the wind and the sun. This spot is really a paradise and has been built up with very much love. For children it would be a great adventure to explore the environment. Can Llouquette is a very good starting point for many activities in the area and we have not seen everything we wanted to see. We will probably have to come back again . In the beautiful setting offered by Can Llouquette, it is hard to go out and to explore the outside-of-paradise because we have been pretty happy while sitting near the fountain or the stream and just read a book or be lost in reverie. Dear Ashley, Dear Simon - You were very hospitable to us and your pleasant and very affectionate nature did us very well, apart from the small talks and travel tips for car and motorcycle. You have been so nice and attentive, always making an effort that nothing is missing, questioning if there is something that you can do for us. Thank you for everything, we wish you health, happiness and continuing success.

Absolutely fabulous, relaxing and interesting

We stayed in the gite (la Bergerie) between 11th and 19th September, 2010 The description of the gite at Can Llouquette is spot on, but when you get there it seems even better and we had a fabulous time! It is well-equipped, right down to the smallest detail and is absolutely spotless and well-furnished. It is well-proportioned with a beautifully cool and stylish bedroom and a spacious living and kitchen area. The balcony is perfect; sitting outside all you can hear is the rustle of the leaves and the distant bubbling of the stream. It was absolute heaven, not a man-made sound to be heard! You can spend your time lazing on your balcony, by the pool or go wandering around the estate and explore the valley and discover the local wildlife. It was lovely just to laze around for the first couple of days, reading, eating, drinking and relaxing. Within the gite there were plenty of maps, guides and ideas of things to do both locally and further away if you want to make the effort. Simon and Ashley were more than willing to offer advice and suggestions when asked. A trip into Spain is a lovely way to spend a day or more should you wish to. You could even go and stay in Barcelona for a couple of days, something we plan to do when we return. The entire holiday was absolutely perfect; a great gite to stay in, a lovely environment to explore and plenty of interesting towns and gorgeous views to spend your time discovering along with two lovely hosts who were there when we wanted them to be. We would (and indeed have done) recommend Can Llouquette to our friends and to anyone who would enjoy such a peaceful, relaxing and fabulous place to stay. It’s one of those places that you make the holiday you want, be it a laze around reading and chatting time, a get into the car and explore everything type of holiday, a walking in the valleys and mountains trek or any combination of those or anything else that you might fancy doing and all with a lovely place to return to each evening.

Perfect family holiday in an exceptional setting

A serendipitous Google search for a family holiday in the Pyrenees introduced us to Can Llouquette. The excellent website won us over immediately but the reality of the property, the hosts and the location surpassed our expectations. The first guests of the season, we were welcomed warmly and, from the start, offered friendship and genuinely helpful advice tailored to our personal requirements. A holiday in a new location with 2 small children (15 months and 3 and a half) is not often a holiday, but here we found something special. The children had everything they could need or want - a comfortable and practical home in the gite, a safe and spacious garden with swings, homemade wendy house, trikes and toys aplenty, a paddling pool and ice lollies when the temperature hit an unexpected 28 degrees, and a charming playmate in the bubbly Sophia. But what set this holiday apart for us was that we were able to have the sort of holiday we once enjoyed before children - fine wine, reading books in deckchairs in the sun, walks in stunning mountain scenery, lazy lunches in beautiful market towns, and daily life in an exceptional setting rather than a bustling 'child-friendly' resort hotel. Nothing prepared us for quite how remote (we are urbanites, albeit in Ireland) Can Llouquette is. We arrived at night in low cloud and, driving the extremely windy roads up the valley, then down the precipitous driveway, we wondered if we had been foolish to choose somewhere so remote. But the views and sounds the next morning - hills covered in rustling trees, the river at the bottom of the valley (my husband was the first guest to take a dip in the plunge pool - very refreshing!), the terrace perched on the side of the hill with no other buildings in sight, distant mountains, peace and beauty - won us over. OK, it is a 25-minute drive to the nearest town for shopping but that is the appeal of Can Llouquette - you really are getting away from it all. That town, Prats de Mollo, is charming and we returned often to wander through the old stone streets, walk up through the narrow tunnel to the fort and eat in the excellent restaurants. Our ambitious plans for a walking holiday with toddlers turned to driving because the road journeys here are unbeatable - the drives into Spain via Coustouges to the restaurant at Tapis and over to Camprodon were a particular joy. Can Llouquette and its hosts are very special and we highly recommend you visit and see for yourself.
