Bright and Quirky Hillcrest Craftsman
Summary:
Funky & vivacious, this dog-friendly 2 bedroom craftsman is centrally-located. Set between Hillcrest and Mission Hills, our location is walkable to countless coffee shops, restaurants, and bars. We are a short drive to Downtown, Gaslamp District, Balboa Park, SD Zoo, Midway, and Coronado. This charming house is perfect for couples, solo adventurers, business travelers, families (with kids), and your furry friends.
We are looking forward to hosting you!
The Space:
Our groovy space includes 2 bedrooms with 1 king size bed and 1 queen sized bed, a funky & fun living space with pull out couch that will surely brighten your day, a laundry room (shared with the guests in the back house) and 1 bathroom with shower (no tub). The kitchen comes with everything you need including gas stove, microwave, and drip coffee maker. There are ceiling fans in the living room and master bedroom, as well as portable AC units in each bedroom. Wifi, Roku TV, and a designated work space makes this house the perfect retreat after a day of sight-seeing. Dining table, and outdoor seating. Parking for at least 2 cars. Along with the charm of an older Craftsman home, there are also some quirks. There are limited electrical outlets throughout the home. You must walk through the first bedroom to gain access to the second.
Guest Access:
The entire front half of the property is yours including the private fenced front yard and multiple car driveway. There is a rear guesthouse that is separate and has its own yard. The laundry (that is part of the main house but is separate and locked off from your space) is shared common space for the use of both units.
The Neighborhood:
Hillcrest is the hub of San Diego's LGBT community and is populated by numerous locally owned businesses and specialty stores. Mission Hills is a largely residential neighborhood with a two-block strip featuring farm-to-table restaurants and local coffee shops.

How close is Bright and Quirky Hillcrest Craftsman to downtown San Diego?
Quirky is a good description. The house is very cute with fun colors and wallpaper, nicely supplied with everything you need (extra credit for a decent frying pan!) but it's has quirks - including the management company's app. We had trouble with the heater which is noisy and oddly placed in the floor and the stove. The manager got all of our problems fixed quickly, but there were enough quirks to subtract one star. Also, an emergency room is very close so ambulances. and the occasional helicopter, are constantly making noise. The neighborhood was fine. We enjoyed walking to a few restaurants. The house is centrally located and easy to get to all the San Diego attractions.
Overall good stay, water heater was off but that might have been due to a recent power outage ( construction was occurring directly outside the property ). Otherwise not terrible stay. The shared laundry was a bit odd and too close to one bedroom. Could not lock the kitchen door due to the house setup have the rest of the house available if someone else is sleeping in the other room. The house is in a great spot for nightlife and restaurants so thats a plus, be aware of the helipad ( at the hospital ) if it lands at night you hear and feel it... :)
Great location. Definitely didnât love sharing space with another family (laundry). We were thinking the shared space was separate from our house - but people could enter the house at any time to do their laundry. (And it was very late one night). Only security for us would be tiny latch locks on bedroom doors and the kitchen door. House was VERY hot when we arrived. It took about 6 hours to cool down with the portable AC units and window units. Beds were very comfortable. It was more run down than pictures showed. It was nice to be close to so much. Nothing terrible but I do wish reviews would have made it more clear of what was to be expected. We didnât complain as this didnât seem to be situations that could be changed (strangers in the home doing laundry and needed renovations.
We stayed at this place with another couple, so the two bedrooms were great. You can access both bedrooms through separate entrances, and thereâs a jack-and-jill bathroom in between the bedrooms. The place was clean and adorably quirky. Lots of A/C units kept the house cool during our summer stay. Would visit again.
We were visiting family in the Hillcrest neighborhood of San Diego. This little house was conveniently situated and easy to find. Spacious parking in a neighborhood where street parking is by permit only was a bonus. The house was spotlessly clean, spacious for two people and well equipped. Communication with the owner was informative and prompt.
This home had everything we needed for a week's stay. It is an easy two minute walk to the business district, and even with the hospital located a block away, the evenings were very quiet. We'd stay here again in a heartbeat. The property manager, Aaron, was quick to respond with any questions we had. Highly recommend this house.
The house was a cozy respite when I was in town helping to care for my ailing mom. The decor is cheerful and the furnishings and bed comfortable. The neighborhood has easy access to shops, restaurants and grocery stores and is an easy hop to Hwy 163.
This Craftsman was adorable and great for a short visit. We were very happy staying in Hillcrest. It's a short drive to downtown, Coronado, and to coastal towns like La Jolla and Del Mar. The house is well-appointed and has everything you need in the kitchen and bathroom. There were four of us, and we felt a little cramped in the space when it came to beds. The primary bedroom was great for my husband and me. My 21-year-old took the back bedroom and my 16-year-old took the pullout couch. He was frequently awakened by sirens (the hospital is close by). I think this house would be perfect for 2-3 people. Also, a note for people with small children. There is a large grate on the living/dining floor that is the main source of heat for the home. When it's on, the grate gets hot, and I'd be concerned about stepping on it with babies or toddlers. We were very happy with our stay!
Lovely house which was literally 12 minutes from every activity we wanted to indulge in. Midway Museum, Balboa Park, SeaWorld, etc. Close to Whole Foods and Lazy Acres, making it easy to pick up food. Kitchen was well appointed. Old house, but with great charm. Our family (2 adults and 2 kids) were able to share the one bathroom easily, but could be more difficult with larger families or with friend groups. Check in was easy, check out was seamless. Some reviews mention traffic related to the hospital near by. Only one time did that come to fruition, otherwise traffic was a none issue. Overall, very happy with our decision to stay here during our extended Thanksgiving break.
Clean, well decorated and awesome location. We needed a quick getaway and loved staying at this adorable place. We were able to walk to all the restaurants, which is so convenient especially because parking at Hillcrest is a challenge.
The neighborhood was beautiful, and we all felt very safe there. The house was exactly as listed, and very clean which was appreciated. It made our stay in San Diego that much better! We came to see our son graduate bootcamp at MCRD and everything we needed was very close to where we stayed. Thank you for hosting us!
Our stay was great! So close to everything San Diego has to offer. The community was safe with areas to eat within walking distance. The house had all the items listed and we were very happy with our stay! We will come back!
