Nice hotel

Posted Nov. 5, 2023 on Hotels
The hotel was spotlessly clean and the room was nice, but perhaps a little dated. There was no shower cubicle but a shower attachment over the bath which was tricky to position and did not appear to be thermostatically controlled so the water temp varied. This however was a minor inconvenience. The staff were lovely. The views from the room over the town and up to the hilltop church were nice. Breakfast was not the best that we had experienced over the week in various places. There was very limited choice and although admittedly we went down to breakfast towards the end of the time slot, there was not much left! We had hoped to eat in the restaurant on the Friday evening we arrived, but unfortunately it was closed.

The first room they offered was a tiny twin bed room overlong a busy road. We asked the a “marital bed” and moved to a lovely room with a view and balcony! Need was great, room clean and spacious. Buffet breakfast poor. It started at 7:30, we arrived at 7;45, they were 4 rolls, 4 slices of cheese and ham, 2 yoghurt and old looking fruit (oranges). A lady arrived with a plate of scrambled eggs 1/2 way through. Compared to the advertised photo of the meal ours was a disappointment.

what a delightful surprise!

When my friend and I, distracted by the beauty of the Douro valley, noticed we had no hotel reservations for that night, it was almost too late, most hotels right by the Douro were fully booked. Fortunately, we could still find a room in the Hotel Aguiar da Pena, although we were a little concerned by the distance to Peso da Regua, where most tourists prefer to stay. It was already dark, but the road was EXCELLENT, so we got there much earlier than we had expected. We were really surprised to see such a big hotel in such a small town. The hotel was amazing and very very affordable, we couldn't have found a better place to stay. There was a huge restaurant, the staff was very nice, the room was clean and comfortable, they even had an outdoor pool. Next day we drove a little bit around Vila Pouca de Aguiar (what a lovely name!) and were once again surprised to see such a little gem, which among pother attractions had a ruined castle. So I highly recommend this hotel if you're visiting the Douro region. It's a great and affordable place to stay, and not far from the action.
